Rise of the Ronin Director Says PlayStation Studios Was Involved in Development Process

The directors, Fumihiko Yasuda and Yosuke Hayashi of the game “Rise of the Ronin”, shared that the primary factor behind its PlayStation exclusivity was the assistance provided by Sony during its development process.

During an interview with RPG Site, it was admitted that although PlayStation facilitated publication and localization for the Nioh series by Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja, PlayStation Studios had a significant role in the creation process of Rise of the Ronin.

In response to a question about collaborating with Sony, Yasuda stated that we had assistance for publishing and localization during the Nioh series, but for “Rise of the Ronin”, not only that, but PlayStation Studios played a significant role in almost the entire development process of the PS5 version.

As a fervent admirer, I’d like to express that my esteemed peers generously imparted invaluable wisdom across diverse domains, such as enhancing accessibility and refining onboarding precision. This not only amplified the worth of our project but also bestowed an extraordinarily enriching experience upon Team Ninja.

Hayashi further explains that “Rise of the Ronin” would never have begun as a project without the backing of PlayStation. He takes a moment to express his gratitude towards the teams at PlayStation Studios for their assistance in bringing the game to market.

Hayashi stated that this project wouldn’t have been initiated without the assistance from PlayStation Studios,” translates as, “This project wouldn’t have begun if not for the backing of PlayStation Studios,” or simply, “The project wouldn’t have kicked off without PlayStation Studios’ support.” All three versions convey the same meaning in a natural and easy-to-read manner.

During the same interview, Yasuda discussed the high popularity of the Nintendo Switch in Japan, mentioning that he’s closely monitoring the impact when the Nintendo Switch 2 eventually launches. For now, Japan is experiencing increased interest in PCs as a gaming platform as well.

Regarding gaming consoles, it’s worth noting that Japan currently has a large number of Nintendo Switch users. I’m keenly observing how the market shifts when Nintendo Switch 2 is released,” says Yasuda.

In terms of our kind of games, it’s true that there’s a large number of PlayStation 5 gamers, yet I can’t help but notice a substantial rise in the number of PC gamers in Japan during the last couple of years as well.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice the frequent mentions of PlayStation Studios by Yasuda in relation to the creation of “Rise of the Ronin”. Although Sucker Punch didn’t work hands-on with the game, Yasuda acknowledges that their open-world masterpiece, “Ghost of Tsushima”, was a significant inspiration during the development process for “Rise of the Ronin”.

The main reason for this was because Rise of the Ronin marked Team Ninja’s debut in creating an open-world game, whereas their earlier series, Nioh, features levels that are more structured and allows players to choose the next level to engage from a menu selection.

The action game titled “Rise of the Ronin” has just been launched on PC platforms. You can read our review of this port right here. Last year, when it was released for PS5 (review available here), it was announced that the game had become Koei Tecmo’s best-selling title to date. Interestingly, shortly after its launch on PS5, “Rise of the Ronin” surpassed the sales of the “Nioh” series.
