Last month, Obsidian Entertainment’s game Avowed debuted simultaneously for Xbox Series X/S and PC, along with Game Pass, after facing multiple postponements and concerning rumors. Critics generally praised it (we awarded it eight out of ten in our review), but neither the studio nor Microsoft have disclosed any information about sales or player statistics yet.
Although director Carrie Patel doesn’t have a clear quantitative measure, she shared with Eurogamer that both the studio and those at the high-level Xbox and Microsoft teams are content with the game’s performance. She has been personally pleased, and all conversations she’s had, including with studio members and higher-ups at Xbox and Microsoft, indicate satisfaction with the game’s success – in terms of the number of players and the amount of time they spend within it.
Although we’re aware that some individuals are accessing our game via Game Pass, others are buying it across multiple platforms. To be honest, I can’t pinpoint a specific statistic or figure for you regarding this matter. However, given its six-year development period and two major overhauls, it’s astonishing that the game has managed to reach such a polished state upon release.
Patel expresses his desire for Obsidian to expand on the game’s captivating world. He says, “Having created this beautiful world and honed our skills as a team in its content and gameplay over these past four years, I’m eager to see us delve deeper into it.” At this point, no definite plans have been announced, but he notes that the team has a deep connection with the world and has gained extensive knowledge about crafting a robust RPG together.
For the time being, various developers are moving on to new assignments, including “The Outer Worlds 2”. This sequel to Obsidian’s 2019 RPG, which amassed over five million players, is set to launch later this year on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. The official release date has not been announced yet, so keep an eye out for future announcements and updates.
