A few weeks back, I was thrilled to learn from The Pokemon Company that Mega Evolutions are making a comeback in the Pokemon Trading Card Game! While details were scant at first, we now have a clearer picture of when these exciting sets will drop. As per PokeBeach’s report, Japan will be the first to welcome Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia on August 1st. That’s when fans in the region can grab these decks starring Lucario and Gardevoir! Following suit, pre-constructed decks centered around Mega Gengar and Mega Diancie will hit the shelves on September 5th. I can hardly wait!
Regrettably, we’re unsure when these collections will become available outside Japan. Typically, there’s a gap of several months between their release in Japan and their arrival in the U.S. For instance, the Scarlet & Violet: Journey Together set, which includes cards from sets that debuted in Japan in January, will hit stores in the U.S. on March 28th. Additionally, our sets often combine cards from different Japanese sets. Therefore, it’s possible that we may see the cards from Mega Brave, Mega Symphonia, and both the Mega Gengar and Mega Diancie sets being blended together in future collections.
Revealing the launch dates for these sets may assist in predicting when Pokemon Legends: Z-A, scheduled for Nintendo Switch in late 2025, will be out. The comeback of Mega Evolutions in the Trading Card Game seems to hint at a release following the video game’s debut, given their role in it. Historically, Pokemon games have been released either in November or October, so we might anticipate a similar pattern for this upcoming title.
Over the past two years, all Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) merchandise has been labeled under the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet brand. However, as per PokeBeach’s recent report, this is set to change with the debut of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, where new TCG sets will come under the “Mega” label. It remains uncertain if this branding will stay consistent in North America or experience some modifications. Many Pokémon enthusiasts speculate that the 10th generation of Pokémon games will be made available on the Nintendo Switch around 2026, which means the Mega branding might only persist for approximately a year.
Although American Pokémon TCG collectors need to be patient for Mega sets to reach their shores, it doesn’t imply that no new cards will be introduced before then. In fact, this month brings us the set called “Journey Together,” and rumors hint at a May release for another set named “Destined Rivals.” This set is said to include cards from Japanese sets such as “The Glory of Team Rocket.” After that, fans can look forward to a summer release of a set inspired by “Pokémon Black and White,” with no leaked cards yet, but Japanese trademarks suggesting its arrival. These revelations have sparked speculation about a potential remake of the Nintendo DS games based on these titles.
