The Rock Confirms New Project (and You’ll Never Guess What It Is)

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is known for leading numerous action movies throughout his career, but his upcoming project will see a significant shift in genre. On his official X account, Johnson announced that he will feature in Martin Scorsese’s forthcoming film about mafia operations in Hawaii. In the post, Johnson shared his feelings about what he calls “the most creatively stimulating period of my career,” expressing appreciation for the opportunity to work with those he holds dear. He also hinted at a story that spans several decades in Scorsese’s new film, suggesting its grand scale.

Johnson expressed appreciation for an exceptionally imaginative phase of his profession, collaborating closely with friends, including the renowned Marty Scorsese. He noted that during the 60s, 70s, and 80s, the mafia held significant influence over New York, Miami, Chicago, Las Vegas, and surprisingly, Hawaii, where he grew up.”

“Grateful for what’s been the most creatively inspiring time of my career – working closely with my friends and of course, the maestro Marty Scorsese. In the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s the mafia controlled New York, Miami, Chicago, Vegas, and a particularly strong hold on the island I was raised – Hawaii.

It’s been an incredibly creative high point in my career that I’m deeply appreciative of – collaborating closely with friends, not forgetting the legendary Marty Scorsese.

In the 60s, 70s, and 80s, the mafia held a firm grip on New York, Miami, Chicago, Las Vegas, and had an especially strong influence over the city where I resided.

Initially in February, news broke about Martin Scorsese’s upcoming gangster movie set in Hawaii. Alongside Johnson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt are expected to take on leading roles. Johnson portrays an ambitious mob boss who climbs the criminal ladder, confronting rival crime groups. His character has been likened to Frank Costello, the character played by Jack Nicholson in Scorsese’s “The Departed.” At present, there is no announced release date for the film.

Johnson seems to be expanding his experiences beyond just collaborating with Scorsese, as he’s working with other renowned directors as well. For instance, he’s featured in Benny Safdie’s film titled “The Smashing Machine“, a portrayal of the life and career of MMA fighter Mark Kerr. Interestingly, Blunt shares the screen with him in this same movie.

The partnership between Scorsese and Johnson is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing collaborations in recent times. While Johnson’s acting roles haven’t typically been well-received by critics, Scorsese’s 21st-century films have received numerous Best Picture nominations and widespread acclaim. It seemed unlikely that their paths would cross, so it will be intriguing to see how their Hawaiian mafia movie unfolds. What’s promising is that Johnson and Blunt presented this project to Scorsese and DiCaprio, who both agreed to participate. This suggests that the film has something unique about it, and given Scorsese’s renowned work in the crime genre, he’s undoubtedly the ideal director for the job.

It appears that Johnson is very excited about his partnership with Scorsese on their upcoming project, hinting at its high importance for him. Given Scorsese’s usual busy schedule and the prestige associated with this collaboration, it seems they are eager to get things moving as quickly as possible. Fingers crossed that all the necessary elements come together soon, allowing the film to progress swiftly. Since Scorsese’s films often receive Oscar recognition, there’s a chance Dwayne Johnson could earn an Academy Award nomination for this project – if not first for “The Smashing Machine,” then perhaps for his role as a gangster in a Scorsese film might prove too tempting for the voters to resist.
