In a somewhat unusual requirement, one of the investors of what many consider the best teenage coming-of-age movie in recent times, Superbad, was Sony. Interestingly enough, as part of their conditions, Jonah Hill’s character, Seth, was not allowed to physically touch or engage with any of the PlayStation consoles on screen.
As a gamer, it’s quite amusing to learn this tidbit. It all stems from an interview with Seth Rogen, who recently shared the most outlandish instruction he ever got from a production company. Given that Superbad has semi-autobiographical elements, with the character of Seth mirroring Rogen himself (thanks to VGC), it’s fascinating to delve into his stories. He reminisces about how “the studio found Seth so unacceptable that they insisted on a scene where we’re playing video games, and Sony specifically demanded that Jonah Hill couldn’t even touch a PlayStation.
They said, “We can’t allow this character to engage with our products, he’s just too repugnant,” and I replied, “That’s offensive because it’s modeled after me,” but in the end, we made an exception.
As a die-hard fan like myself, you may remember the scene in our favorite movie where I, along with the other characters, watch Michael Cera (Evan) play PlayStation 2’s “The Getaway: Black Monday”. During their friendly banter, Seth was preoccupied with finding an outfit for their big adventure, leaving us to wonder which cooperative or competitive PS2 game could have been playing instead. That mystery, alas, remains unsolved.
