The character Juggernaut shares a rich past with the X-Men, stemming from the transformation of Charles Xavier’s step-brother, Cain Marko, into the virtually unstoppable force known as Juggernaut after discovering the temple of the malevolent deity Cyttorak. Since then, Juggernaut has utilized his formidable power for personal gain, but recent developments have brought about a shift in his character. Juggernaut is now evolving, with his animosity towards Xavier and the X-Men subsiding, and he’s even taken up arms against the destructive influence of Cyttorak. Currently, Juggernaut stands as a member of the X-Men, teaming up with Cyclops and their squad to safeguard mutants. The ongoing “X-Manhunt” storyline by Marvel Comics finds the various mutant groups, including the X-Men and X-Factor (a new government-sanctioned mutant team), in a heated conflict over the custody of Charles Xavier. In issue #8 of X-Factor, written by Mark Russell and Bob Quinn, the X-Men engage in an intense battle with X-Factor, culminating in one of Juggernaut’s most intriguing fights in recent memory.
From the start of his superhero/supervillain career, Juggernaut has clashed with the original X-Men. Interestingly, among the five original X-Men, it’s always been Angel, now known as Archangel, who struggled the most against Juggernaut in combat. However, the latest confrontation between them is quite unexpected given Archangel’s recent medical history. As X-Factor #8 reveals, Archangel underwent numerous surgeries for a reason, and these procedures have significantly boosted his abilities. In their fight, Archangel manages to subdue Juggernaut, which could potentially cause trouble for everyone in the near future.
Archangel’s New Form Is More Dangerous than Ever
Initially, among the original X-Men, Archangel was the least powerful. His angelic wings added aesthetics and flight as useful abilities, but his offensive strength mirrored that of a fit human. He could attack enemies with his wings, but against tough opponents like Juggernaut, his powers were ineffective. However, following the “Mutant Massacre,” Archangel experienced a significant upgrade. The Marauders captured him and removed his wings, plunging him into despair. On the brink of suicide, he was rescued by Apocalypse who transformed him into Death’s Horseman, equipping him with razor-sharp wings that allowed for faster flight than ever before. Since then, Archangel’s powers have undergone frequent changes. His original wings reappeared, he developed a healing factor, and eventually mastered the ability to transform between Angel and Archangel forms.
Instead of simply granting Archangel new wings to improve his life in “The Dark Angel Saga”, Apocalypse brought about a profound transformation. The Death form of Archangel made him more perilous than ever, and it was disclosed that Apocalypse’s machinations posed a significant threat to his teammates. Unbeknownst to everyone, the Horseman of Death was destined to overthrow Apocalypse using a Death Seed, assuming the mantle of the new Apocalypse. Archangel’s descent into villainy culminated in the destruction of an entire American town. Psylocke, his then-girlfriend, mindwiped him following this event. In the subsequent years, Archangel grappled with memory loss and eventually became a psychically controlled hunter/killer drone under Psylocke’s control. Although he has improved since then, the X-Men find it alarming whenever Archangel acquires new powers; each time, he has succumbed to darkness. Archangel’s elective surgeries aimed at enhancing his Archangel form could lead to dire consequences in the future.
Archangel Gaining New Power Could Be a Problem for the X-Men
In his latest transformation, Archangel appears to be stronger than ever before. Despite Juggernaut’s recent encounter with Storm under Eternity’s influence, he was essentially at full strength when the fight against X-Factor commenced. The fact that Archangel managed to knock out Juggernaut signifies a significant improvement for the winged mutant, and this development should make every member of the X-Men think twice. However, Archangel’s mind has always been his greatest weakness, and this new form could potentially lead him down a dangerous path.
The emergence of Archangel as a creation during the Apocalypse era has become one of the X-Men’s most significant vulnerabilities. Growing up alongside the X-Men and being a valued member of their team, Archangel’s loyalty was unwavering until his transformation took place. It appears that with each increase in his power, he ventures into increasingly risky territories. His recent decision to enhance himself further, aiming to overcome the indomitable Juggernaut, might signal a return of an even more menacing Archangel – one whose trustworthiness is questionable.
