Recently, Green Lantern has been garnering increased interest due to DC and writer Jeremy Adams crafting a fresh, grand saga, where the Green Lantern Corps find themselves embroiled in events far beyond their capabilities, without the usual support from the Oans. The emotional spectrum shift has caused chaos, leaving other corps scrambling to restore their power. In the comic book series Green Lantern Corps, these new conflicts are being explored, with issue two, penned by Adams, Morgan Hampton, and Fernando Pasarin, transporting readers to the aftermath of the devastation of one of DC’s key planets – Thanagar, the dwelling place of the Thanagarians. This race has a significant history with characters like Hawkman and Hawkwoman, as many of their past lives were intertwined with this warlike species.
Thanagar was demolished by Mogo, the sentient planet, under the influence of an enraged toxin, thanks to the scheming of ex-United Planets leader Thaaros. Remarkably, the debris from the destroyed planet contains something unforeseen. This discovery draws one of Green Lantern’s deadliest adversaries, eager to reclaim their power and not hesitating to plunder the desolate planet to obtain the Thanagarians’ most prized resource – Nth metal. Nth metal carries a rich history in the DC Multiverse, and the loot from Thanagar is unlike anything ever witnessed before.
Nth Metal Is One of the Most Important Substances in the Multiverse
The Nth metal, dating back almost as long as DC Comics itself, debuted alongside Hawkman in Flash Comics #1 from 1940. Initially, this metal formed the foundation of Hawkman’s harness, bestowing him with the ability to resist gravity, enabling flight and wing navigation/propulsion, along with enhanced strength and a healing factor. Over time, it was discovered that his iconic mace, symbolizing both Hawkman and Hawkgirl in the DCAU, was also fashioned from Nth metal. This metal persisted through the Silver Age reboot of Hawkman, but it was eventually unveiled that the metal originated from Thanagar and its gravity-defying characteristics were a significant aspect of Thanagarian society. It was later disclosed that Nth metal had the capability to absorb energy, making it an ideal material for crafting weapons and armor.
Further enhancements were in store for Nth metal as DC approached the Metal/Death Metal series, with it being unveiled as the ninth out of ten crucial metals for the multiverse. This rare resource is highly sought-after, making this discovery all the more significant. Nth metal possesses a wide range of abilities, particularly in energy manipulation, which is why Atrocitus and the former Red Lanterns are eager to obtain it. Green Lantern Corps #2 suggests that Atrocitus has discovered another means to channel rage energy, and his ship requires Nth metal for its functioning. Additionally, the Nth metal core has attracted the attention of the Sorrow, the ruler of sadness energy, who believes the core could be useful for his malicious objectives.
The Nth Metal Core Could Change the Balance of Power in the Universe
1st Version: The Nth Metal enabled the Thanagarians to rise among the most intimidating species in the cosmos. Their airborne warriors, akin to the Klingons of the DC Universe, were fueled by one of the universe’s most potent substances. The Nth Metal is coveted by numerous beings, and now a substantial piece of it drifts through space. The Green Lantern Corps face a formidable task; Atrocitus and the Sorrow are merely the start of those eager to seize this immense amount of Nth Metal. The United Planets find themselves in turmoil, and only the Green Lanterns possess the might to prevent this discovery from igniting chaos.
Currently, things in space are precariously balanced. If Atrocitus manages to acquire the Nth metal core from Thanagar, it could potentially reignite the Red Lanterns and restore their Central Power Battery. This is not what the universe needs at this time, but that’s the potential impact of the Nth metal core. It has the ability to drastically alter the power dynamics.
Green Lantern Corps #2 is on sale where ever comics are sold.
