The Russo brothers are set to rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe soon, directing additional Avengers films titled Doomsday and Secret Wars. At present, however, they have carried on with their streak of producing movies exclusively for streaming platforms, releasing a fresh project called The Electric State.
The dystopian thriller, adapted from an illustrated novel by Simon Stålenhag, recently debuted on Netflix. It stars Millie Bobby Brown as Michelle, a teenager living without family in a technologically-ruled society where she has conflict and tension with the pervasive technology.
A dramatic shift occurs in her life when a robot called Cosmo unexpectedly appears at her doorstep, asserting that it’s being operated by her presumed deceased genius sibling, Christopher.
Eagerly seeking answers about her sibling’s fate, she embarks on an adventure that leads her to encounter Chris Pratt’s unconventional smuggler named Keats, shady individuals from tech corporation Sentre, and various robots who were once part of a recent rebellion.
If you’ve watched the movie and are curious about its conclusion, continue reading for a detailed explanation of The Electric State finale.

The Electric State ending explained
In their quest for Christopher, Michelle and Cosmo experience a significant milestone when they encounter Doctor Amherst, who had earlier shared the news about Christopher’s passing.
It wasn’t a shock when it was discovered that this wasn’t entirely true: for quite some time, Christopher had actually been kept in a coma by Sentre. Remarkably, his brain provided the necessary computational power for their groundbreaking invention, the Neurocaster, as the system required an immense amount of processing power to function effectively.
Initially, they intended to maintain him in a prolonged coma, but suddenly, Christopher regained consciousness. Despite Amherst’s emergence of compassion and attempts to liberate him, Ethan Skate, the leader at Sentre, forbade it, ultimately dismissing the Doctor from his position.
Before departing, Amherst made certain that although Christopher’s physical self couldn’t flee, his consciousness would – a trait that had empowered him to command Cosmo and contact his sister. However, with his consciousness missing, the Sentre network faces the danger of collapsing, leading Skate to dispatch his associates, including Colonel Marshall Bradbury (Giancarlo Esposito), in pursuit of Cosmo and Michelle.
After some pulse-pounding action sequences unfold, I found myself witnessing Cosmo getting captured, Amherst meeting his unfortunate end, Michelle sneaking into Sentre HQ, and virtually reconnecting with Christopher amidst a massive fight between friendly robots and Skate’s drones outside. However, my heart sunk when she spoke to her brother, as he didn’t appear overly hopeful about finding an escape route.
In the end, with Christopher’s assistance, she comes to understand that the sole method of overcoming Skate and his followers is by turning off her brother’s life support system, which in turn shuts down Sentre’s networks. Overwhelmed with emotion, she makes this heartrending decision as the music reaches a crescendo, and carries it out.
It seems that the task was successfully accomplished – all the drones shut down, and subsequently, we discover that Skate was apprehended and his nefarious activities exposed.
What does Michelle’s video message mean?

At the end of the movie, Michelle makes an appeal to the audience to resist Sentre’s technological innovations, particularly the neurocasters. Instead, she encourages them to value the strength of human relationships as a montage of scenes from the film and her past unfolds, underscoring the importance of personal connections.
Speaking directly into the camera, Michelle Green explains: “Hi, I’m Michelle Green. I understand some of you might be a bit uneasy about me and my robot companions, as well as what transpired. The globe has undergone changes lately, and I wanted to share the reasons behind it with you. The actions taken by Sentre weren’t only detrimental to robots; they posed harm to everyone.
She goes on to say: “I understand the war occurred, causing chaos and misery. For a time, perhaps, the neurocasters eased the pain by distracting us. We grew accustomed to this state, believing it was genuine existence. But it isn’t. Authentic life, true life, is about connection – it’s you and me.
Though we are made of flesh and bone, there’s an electric connection too. When we embrace, laugh, share moments, even argue, energy exchanges occur between us. Perhaps we could be together forever, but that requires opening up. It can only happen in the actual world, outside our individual shells.
Glance about, for certainty, someone is in close proximity. They exist and breathe, just like you. And they depend on you as much as you rely on them. If there isn’t anyone nearby, know that we are here, ready to connect. We’re starting anew, determined to get it right this time, together.
The movie’s central idea seems to emphasize the importance of maintaining a connection with reality while using digital devices. It advises viewers not to get too immersed in virtual worlds on their phones, computers, or gaming consoles, but rather to nurture genuine relationships and experience true human emotions.
Could Christopher still be alive?
Although it appears undeniably that Christopher’s physical being ceases with Michelle turning off his life support, there seems to be a subtle hint towards the end of the movie suggesting that perhaps a part of his consciousness may have lingered.
Towards the closing scenes of the movie, following Michelle’s recording of the previously mentioned video (accompanied by a softly playing piano rendition of Wonderwall), the motionless Cosmo is discarded in a pile of junk.
However, in the last scene, it seems like he is looking towards a neighboring canine, with the song changing to The Flaming Lips’ “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Part 1” as the background music.
It seems that, in some capacity, Christopher continues to exist, albeit now as a robot.
