Following her latest power enhancement, Black Lightning’s daughter, Thunder, could potentially surpass the strength of her father in the DC Universe. Black Lightning is a hero who has skillfully integrated his family into his superhero life – his daughters are known as Thunder and Lightning. However, since the conclusion of “Absolute Power”, Thunder has been grappling with power-related complications. Both heroes and villains have observed significant alterations in their powersets, and Thunder is now dealing with these changes. Initially, the Justice League perceived Thunder’s transformations as detrimental; however, they eventually helped her rescue both Black Lightning and Lightning. (Spoiler alert: The discussion below contains spoilers for Black Lightning #5!)
Issue #5 of “Black Lightning” is penned by Brandon Thomas, Fico Ossio, Ulises Arreola, and Lucas Gattoni. Following Thunder’s powers acting up, Black Lightning escorts her to the Justice League Watchtower for monitoring. This type of surveillance by Batman, however, translates to imprisonment. Unfortunately, this situation arises at a particularly inopportune moment, as Black Lightning and Lightning are right in the thick of battle against the Sons of Liberty within a warehouse. They have been trying to thwart Volcana and her Masters of Disaster, but their forces are simply too numerous.
It seems that Thunder spent her time at the Watchtower learning to control her abilities, and when she escaped, she brilliantly demonstrated her powers by rescuing her family.
DC reveals Thunder’s new concussive force powers
In issue #5 of Black Lightning, Thunder initiates a conversation with Batman, who she’s aware is observing her within the Justice League Watchtower. Though the Justice League has kept Thunder confined, she’s been diligently honing her powers to keep them under control. However, her family requires her assistance, prompting Thunder to gear up for a return to superhero duties. Let’s hope that anyone who dares obstruct her path meets with divine intervention.
Well then, Batman?” Thunder inquires. “Shall we avoid any conflict between us… or not?” In response, Batman opens the door to Thunder’s room, signaling an opportunity for her to leave. As a result, Thunder contacts Grace Choi, her ex-partner, and sets out to rescue her father and sister.
In this scenario, Black Lightning and Lightning are receiving heavy blows from the Sons of Liberty, who seem to have the upper hand against Black Lightning, using baseball bats. Their powers have been neutralized by a nullifier, but they’re collaborating as a team to maintain their ground. Lightning signals the location of the villains so that Black Lightning can land punches and kicks despite being momentarily stunned. A crash sound alerts them, signaling Thunder’s arrival. With her new electrically charged concussive force powers, Thunder joins the fight.
Thunder has always possessed an extraordinary ability to manipulate strength and density, but recently, she’s acquired a formidable attack that generates a powerful shockwave. As she touches the ground, it detonates violently, propelling enemies and electric blasts skyward. It’s quite a spectacle, and just enough to turn the tide in her favor. However, when the Metropolis City Police Department arrives in a helicopter and commands Thunder to raise her hands, she frets over losing control of her powers once more. Thankfully, Grace Choi is on hand to soothe Thunder’s nerves, enabling her to regain command over her abilities.
After rejoining her kin, Thunder, Black Lightning, and their team (Lightning) join forces with Grace Choi and Windfall in a climactic battle against Volcana and the Masters of Disaster. In their confrontation, Thunder and Volcana clash, resulting in Thunder’s victory. Once all is said and done, Thunder sits down for therapy and reveals that Black Lightning has appointed Thunder as the head of the Justice League’s metahuman outreach program.
Black Lightning accepts a new role in the DC Universe
In issue #5 of ‘Black Lightning’, Jefferson Pierce secretly meets with Josiah Power at a barbershop. Earlier, Josiah had attempted to enlist Black Lightning in the reformation of his Power Company, but Black Lightning had declined due to his commitment to the Justice League. However, as Councilman Harriman was unmasked as the instigator of the chaos in Southside Heights, Black Lightning understands that such threats can’t merely be fought physically. To combat anti-metahuman groups effectively, it seems the Power Company will prove essential.
DC has unveiled The Power Company: Renewed Energy, a standalone comic that springs from the storylines of DC Power: The Rise of the Power Company and Black Lightning, set to release in April. This upcoming issue will delve into the emergence of this version of the Power Company, as they take a stand against the anti-metahuman movement, while also exposing a serial killer who is preying on metahumans in Atlanta.
In “The Power Company: Revitalized,” you’ll find characters like Black Lightning, Josiah Power, Batman (Jace Fox), the Signal, and Vixen taking center stage. This means Black Lightning’s tale will carry on in this series, and it’s likely that fans will get a peek at Thunder displaying her new abilities in other parts of the story as well.
