In June, prolific writer Jonathan Hickman is set to breathe fresh life into the cosmic realm of the Marvel Universe. Known for his successful tenure on the Krakoa era of X-Men comics, as well as significant runs on Fantastic Four and Avengers, Hickman is embarking on a new venture with Imperial – a four-issue event series co-created with acclaimed artists Federico Vicentini and Iban Coello. Imperial, launching in June, will pave the way for a new phase of cosmic titles within Marvel. This epic tale will bring about significant alterations to popular franchises such as Hulk, Black Panther, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Nova. Vicentini and Coello are also set to unveil groundbreaking character redesigns, new locales, and much more.
Hickman expressed great enthusiasm about this project, given his deep-rooted love for everything related to Marvel Cosmic. His aim is to emulate the approach taken with the latest Ultimate series across our space comics, making the setup book (IMPERIAL) serve as a significant event rather than just world building (similar to the Ultimate Invasion). The art team is doing an exceptional job, and we’re all buzzing with anticipation for the unfolding events in this distinctive part of the Marvel Universe.
According to Vicentini, collaborating with Hickman proves to be an exhilarating task. He admires Hickman’s scripts immensely due to their intelligent dialogue and meticulous attention towards the narrative’s environment. Previously, I was only familiar with Hickman as a reader; thus, the opportunity to team up with him and the brilliant artist, Iban, was nothing short of amazing! I am putting in every effort to deliver top-notch work, and let me tell you, it’s been an absolute blast!
Coello expressed his excitement about participating in the project, finding joy in designing all the fresh characters and costumes. Working alongside Hickman was an unexpected pleasure that left him feeling both thrilled and slightly daunted due to the grandeur of Hickman’s work depicted in the scripts. He eagerly anticipates meeting this challenge and delivering top-notch results!
Back in December, Marvel initially hinted at “Imperial” being Jonathan Hickman’s upcoming venture. A promotional artwork showcased the word “Imperial” and the phrase, “Jonathan Hickman introduces the culmination of beginnings,” as well as “Nature hates a vacuum.” The projected launch date was Summer 2025, which we now understand starts in June.
In the designs by Iban Coello and Federico Vincentini, characters such as Hulk, She-Hulk, and Skaar are depicted in armor reminiscent of Hulk’s gladiator attire from the “Planet Hulk” period. Additionally, there are fresh designs for Nova, Star-Lord, and an individual who seems to resemble Star-Lord’s father, J’son of Spartax. Iban Coello’s Hulks design teaser carries the message, “Let this world know what power looks like,” while Federico Vincentini’s Guardians teaser bears the phrase, “Never miss an opportunity to exploit a crisis.
