The Marvel Cinematic Universe no longer holds the same magic as it did before, with much of that change being attributed to its villains or rather, the absence of compelling ones. In the early stages, from phase one to three, the MCU benefited greatly from a unified antagonist force headed by Thanos, the Mad Titan, and his relentless pursuit of the Infinity Stones. However, following the conclusion of “The Infinity Saga” with Avengers: Endgame, there has been a noticeable lack of a cohesive overarching plot or a formidable villain lurking in the shadows. Marvel Studios attempted an extraordinary pivot by shifting focus from Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror to Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, who will conclude the current “Multiverse Saga” of the MCU with the releases of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Post-Secret Wars, the franchise is set for a refresh that will introduce a new era in the MCU, one where mutants such as the X-Men and superpowered families like the Fantastic Four will share the same reality as the Avengers.
As Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) embarks on its next phase, it opens up an opportunity to bring in truly impactful antagonists who could shape the future of the franchise for a considerable period. Instead of appearing only in a single movie or show, their narrative arcs could span multiple productions.
Here are the Top 5 Marvel Villains That Could Save the MCU’s Next Phase.
Mr. Sinister
one of these clones sought omnipotence through genetic mutations and became known as “Mister Sinister,” causing misery for mutants ever since.
In the lore developed during the “Krakoa Era” of X-Men, Sinister, Essex, and their clones have gained more evidence supporting their role as a hidden antagonist, subtly guiding or monitoring events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for centuries. It’s plausible that Sinister will play a crucial part in understanding why mutants were ignored for so long or become a significant species in the upcoming MCU series. As fans of X-Men comics are aware, Sinister has a knack for manipulating events covertly before making a dramatic move (such as reshaping reality to his dark likeness or gaining some form of divinity), which fits perfectly with the concept of a slow-building main villain.
Annihilus
In simpler terms, Annihilus is an alien from a secretive dimension called the Negative Zone, resembling an insect and driven by a destructive philosophy known as Nihilism. Fearful only of death, he acquired the powerful Cosmic Control Rod, which amplified his power, control over various cosmic forces, and prolonged his life significantly. Annihilus’ singular goal is to invade other dimensions with his infamous “Annihilation Wave” fleet, amassing power for personal gain or preservation of his existence. To put it plainly, he’s all about conquering other realms.
The cosmic realm within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is crying out for a revamp. While it boasts numerous films and series like the “Thor” movies, the “Guardians of the Galaxy” Trilogy, “Eternals,” “Captain Marvel,” “The Marvel,” “Secret Invasion,” “Avengers: Infinity War & Endgame,” they lack a strong connecting narrative thread. Annihilus could potentially bring about this change. The “Annihilation War” event of Marvel Comics is fondly remembered for its epic cosmic storyline. This villain poses a clear and imminent danger to the entire Marvel universe, providing ample time for it to travel towards Earth, thereby necessitating the combined efforts of teams such as the Fantastic Four, Avengers, and all the aforementioned cosmic heroes. “Annihilation” could thus provide the long-awaited cosmic event that MCU fans have been craving.
Molecule Man
One key figure has been intimately linked to the Marvel Comics saga “Secret Wars”: Owen Reece, also known as The Molecule Man. Originally, Reece was a technician at a nuclear power station; an encounter with an unidentified radiation type altered his cellular structure, bestowing upon him divine abilities to manipulate matter at a molecular level or sense any matter he concentrates on. It was subsequently disclosed that Reece’s metamorphosis was in fact the doing of extraterrestrial beings known as The Beyonders, who designed Reece as a singularity across all realities – a living bomb made of matter, capable of obliterating an entire reality when detonated.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but imagine myself reflecting on the epic tale of Secret Wars from the 2010s. In this narrative, the God-Emperor Doom harnessed Molecule Man’s immense power to piece together his “Battleworld” reality, a patchwork of shattered pieces from various Marvel universes. With Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars seemingly reenacting this epic saga, it’s clear that Molecule Man could be a pivotal antagonist in these two event films.
But the story doesn’t end there! After the dust settles, Molecule Man might continue to lurk somewhere in the cosmos, ready to serve as a kind of “reset button” for the franchise whenever needed. Or perhaps he could be used to offer fans tantalizing glimpses into alternate universes or character variants on a smaller scale. What an exciting prospect that would be!
Apocalypse
Currently, most Marvel enthusiasts are familiar with Apocalypse, also known as “En Sabah Nur,” who was an Egyptian slave turned into the first recognized mutant from the Second Generation era. After overpowering Ancient Egypt, Apocalypse shifted to the intelligent island of Okkara and founded a community of extremely potent mutants together with his wife Genesis. In a war between mutants and a demonic realm (Amenth), half the island was destroyed, causing Apocalypse to remain on Earth to close the portal, which ultimately resulted in him losing his original family. For centuries after that, Apocalypse has been striving to mold modern mutants into fierce combatants and survivors like his initial clan, often leading to outcomes where he dominates the world (including humans, mutants, and even machines), plunging it into a catastrophic struggle.
The character Apocalypse, if introduced earlier in the Fox X-Men series, would have made a formidable antagonist right from the beginning. Not only is he intricate, captivating, and rich in deep history – his narrative also intertwines with Kang, the Fantastic Four, and numerous other Marvel characters and incidents. Once the Mutiverse Saga concludes, it seems likely that the next major danger in the MCU will revolve around time (once more). The fact that Apocalypse can coexist in past, present, and future makes him a continuous threat to the timeline, instantly introducing the MCU to a fresh set of challenges: preventing an apocalyptic future like the notorious “Age of Apocalypse.” Let’s all just disregard the X-Men: Apocalypse film. That wasn’t representative of his true potential.
The Maker
In the movie “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” Pedro Pascal’s character, Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, makes his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, fans who are deeply rooted in Marvel comics have been eagerly anticipating to see him portray another character – Reed Richards’ villainous counterpart known as The Maker. Originally from Marvel’s initial “Ultimate Universe” reality (Earth-1610), The Maker was once a younger Reed who joined the Fantastic Four but later became fixated on improving the world, leading to conflicts with Sue Storm and his teammates Johnny and Ben.
The Maker accelerated his own evolution by a thousand years and leveraged his intelligence to survive the incursion of his reality during Secret Wars, eventually reaching Doom’s Battleworld. Remarkably, he managed to endure being essentially ‘unmade’ by Molecule Man through the use of backup bodies stored across various universes.
In more recent times, The Maker broke free from custody and constructed a new version of the Ultimate Marvel Universe (Earth-6160). In this universe, he either halted or delayed the origins of most Marvel heroes, leaving the world under the control of a council consisting of villains, corrupted heroes, and religious extremists.
In contemporary Marvel Comics, The Maker is undoubtedly one of the most formidable villainous forces. Given that the MCU has discarded Jonathan Majors’ Kang and his Council of Kangs, the idea of an evil Reed Richards, potentially the last surviving variant of the Marvel Multiverse, could be thrilling – especially if this character adheres to the comics and paves a dark new “Ultimate” path within the MCU franchise.
The movie titled “Avengers: Doomsday” is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, while the film known as “Avengers: Secret Wars” will follow suit with its release on May 7, 2027.
