A fresh chapter in the Venom saga has been introduced, leaving readers intrigued by an unexplored enigma. Eddie Brock is no longer bonded with Venom, nor is his son Dylan. Instead, Dylan resides with Mary Jane Watson and her husband Paul, observing as this new Venom leaps into action, attempting to unravel the identity of the individual who now bears the symbiote that once connected with him and his father. Marvel has amplified the suspense, offering four potential candidates for the new Venom: Rick Jones, Robbie Robertson, Madame Masque, and Luke Cage. The latest issue, All-New Venom #4 by Al Ewing and Carlos Gomez, further develops this narrative, narrowing down the list of suspects by eliminating two and suggesting that one deserves a more thorough investigation.
Over the past few years, Venom’s story within the Marvel Universe has been significant, with his fights against Knull reshaping both heroes and villains with symbiotes to an entirely fresh level. The latest series, All-New Venom, carries on this narrative, giving Venom a new lease of life after years of symbiote-related antics that failed to advance the character significantly. In this newest issue of All-New Venom, Venom faces an adversary that nobody could have anticipated, and we also witness the return of a symbiote that fans haven’t seen for quite some time.
Madame Masque and Rick Jones Aren’t Venom
In a surprising twist, Madame Masque never seemed like an obvious candidate to become Venom. Initially, it’s worth noting that symbiotes typically conceal the presence of a woman within them, but this isn’t usually the case. This was one of the challenges. However, the most significant issue lies in Madame Masque’s character: she is not a heroic figure by any means; instead, she has always been self-absorbed, as readers are reminded in All-New Venom #4.
In Midtown Manhattan, Madame Masque was seen executing someone and broadcasting the event live to attract Attacking Intelligence Operations (AIM)’s attention. As this unfolded, AIM agents arrived on the scene, and Madame Masque shot one of them, but not with an ordinary bullet. Instead, she used a miniaturized version of MODOK.
Meanwhile, Rick Jones was meeting with Robbie Robertson when he received an alert about Madame Masque’s attack. Robertson promptly dismissed Jones before making a mysterious comment about his day’s plans.
In the storyline, Venom appears and MODOK manages to gain an upper hand against him, using his psi-blasts repeatedly. However, Venom eventually breaks free and defeats Madame Masque, trapping her in webbing. This action provides MODOK with an opportunity to unleash a powerful psi-blast at Venom. The issue then reveals the new Venom host, who has an ordinary physique beneath the symbiote. As the story unfolds, Rick Jones appears on the scene, and MODOK inquires about his arrival. Rick can’t recall how he got there before vomiting out a black goo of symbiotic origin. It’s important to note that Rick Jones isn’t Venom himself, but rather a host for another symbiote called Sleeper, which had a unique bond with Dylan Brock. The issue concludes with a confrontation between Rick and MODOK.
There’s Only One Venom Candidate Left… Or Is There?
In the latest issue of All-New Venom #2, Luke Cage and Rick Jones, along with Madame Masque, have been ruled out as potential candidates for Venom. However, it appears that Rick may possess a symbiote of his own. With these three contenders eliminated, Robbie Robertson seems to be the only remaining possibility for Venom. The interaction between Rick Jones and Robbie Robertson raises suspicion, as Robertson inquires about Jones’ knowledge of Venom’s identity in such a way that suggests he might know more than he’s revealing. Later, Robertson dismisses his calls and leaves his office, just before Venom makes an appearance at Madame Masque’s location. These events strongly imply that Robbie Robertson could be the mysterious Venom.
Despite the portrayal of Robbie as Venom not sitting well with many, a popular fan theory suggests that perhaps Paul could be unmasked as Venom instead. Marvel’s persistent focus on Paul is one of the more puzzling developments; fans dislike him yet Marvel continues to push him onto readers. Over the years, Marvel has often toyed with fans, particularly in Spider-Man stories, so making Paul into Venom aligns with their recent behavior. For now, it’s unclear who will be revealed as Venom, but this latest issue at least clarifies that Robbie is not the one under the symbiote suit.
