In a career spanning over half a century, Stephanie Beacham has shown versatility, taking on roles ranging from horror films to daytime soaps to hard-edged action series (like Duchess). However, ‘Grey Matter‘ is different, as she portrays Peg, a woman in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. Peg is also the mother of Eileen (Elizabeth Berrington) and grandmother to Chloe (Eloise Smyth), a rebellious teenager who finds new meaning in her life through her relationship with her grandmother. As Chloe, she skips swimming lessons, argues with customers at her part-time job, and eventually gets fired. Yet, it’s her bond with her grandmother that provides her with a fresh sense of purpose. Despite being reluctantly placed as Peg’s unofficial caregiver by her mother, Chloe develops a strong connection with her grandmother, just as Peg starts to slip away due to the disease.
In one of the most impactful scenes in the movie, Peg, distraught, abruptly abandons her plan to create a bucket list due to her worsening health condition in the bathroom. This moment allows Beacham to fully demonstrate her acting skills. Similarly, towards the end of the film, Chloe crumbles upon understanding that her grandmother is beyond help due to the disease. Both scenes are heart-wrenching and beautifully portrayed by the actors. These poignant moments underscore the reality that it’s not just the sick who suffer; their loved ones do too. Smyth’s performance deserves broader acclaim, as these scenes resonate deeply with the audience.
In simpler terms, The two key moments in Grey Matter stand out because the rest of the film follows typical patterns for disease-of-the-week dramas and often feels predictable. However, both actors deliver solid performances. Chloe’s romantic storyline with a support group regular doesn’t add much to the plot, and the character of Chloe’s father is underdeveloped, with most of his lines feeling forced and uncomfortable.
In our conversation, we engage with Eloise Smyth and Arabella Burfitt-Dons concerning the movie, as well as their experience collaborating with Stephanie Beacham.
