There have been discussions among fans suggesting that the cherished character Professor Friede from Pokemon Horizons might be leaving the series soon. The fourth opening of Pokemon Horizons, titled “Only One Story,” has caused anxiety among fans who believe that this means the departure of Professor Friede, somehow and somehow. As the commander of the Rising Volt Tacklers, Professor Friede is a lovable yet fiery character who stands out because he’s unusually prepared for battles but also intelligent. The fourth opening portrays Friede walking towards a beam of white light, which many fans have interpreted as him heading towards the afterlife. Recent promotional images and rumors might be hinting that we may not see Professor Friede in the world of Pokemon for much longer.
In the Pokémon anime, the theme of death is seldom explored. Few human characters meet their end within the anime’s narrative. Characters like Gibeon’s unnamed daughter, who died offscreen and were only mentioned in flashbacks, are exceptions. Occasionally, villains or henchmen meet their demise in Pokémon movies. The fate of Cyrus from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl is ambiguous, leaving room for interpretation about whether the character is alive or dead. If Friede were to depart from the series, it would mark a significant shift, solidifying Horizons as a distinctly different show from the original Pokémon anime featuring Ash.
There’s Reasonable Evidence That Professor Friede Is Going Away in Pokemon Horizons
In the opening scene of “Pokemon Horizons,” the symbolic journey toward the radiant light in “Only One Story” is frequently interpreted as a character’s departure from the physical world. This brilliant, pure light stands for the afterlife, suggesting the character is moving away from our perspective, with his back turned to us. Essentially, we, the viewers, represent the other characters, and Friede is leaving the Rising Volt Tacklers behind as he advances towards the white light.
In other indications that Professor Friede might step back from Pokemon Horizons (also known as Pokemon Mega Voltage), her absence from the latest promotional image for Act 5 is significant. Additionally, Captain Pikachu, who is usually with Friede, is seen carrying her characteristic goggles, which are cracked, indicating a severe impact that shattered them. The damaged goggles, Friede’s absence in all promotions, and the imagery of walking towards a bright light don’t present a positive outlook for the Professor’s upcoming role.
An alternative perspective suggests that Friede might deceive the group and leave them behind. Yet, considering his strong commitment towards his companions, this scenario appears less probable.

Professor Fried Could Just Be Trapped
Despite the fact that the Pokemon series has dealt with death previously, it’s hard to envision the anime actually killing off a major character. Presently, the storyline in Horizons finds the characters in Laqua, a mystical realm where they are attempting to halt Gibeon from excavating a powerful material that might endanger the world. Friede may choose to make the ultimate sacrifice, sealing the entrance to Laqua on the other side to prevent others from reaching the legendary lands. In essence, this would mean that the character wouldn’t actually die, but he would effectively be inaccessible to most of the characters, which could be seen as not much better than death.
What does Professor Friede’s Absence Mean for the Future of the Show?
As the head coach and most skilled instructor, Professor Friede played a crucial role on the team. His departure leaves a void in leadership, making it necessary for other characters like Liko, Roy, and Dot to take charge. This might push them to fill the gap between their current abilities and those of Friede. Without Friede’s powerful training, characters such as Liko will need to grow stronger in order to face off against the Explorers.
Beyond this, the demise or absence of a significant character might serve to distinguish Horizons from traditional anime. Compared to the original Pokemon series, the anime was rather light when addressing mature themes, particularly following the initial seasons. Horizons aimed to diverge from the original show in various ways, such as featuring a female protagonist and allowing characters to progress in age. The introduction of character death is uncharted territory for the franchise, potentially enabling it to tell daring new tales. Successful franchises thrive on growth and development, and if Friede were to depart, this could possibly propel the Pokemon anime to greater heights.
