I can’t help but be captivated by the enigmatic, somber, and brooding figure that is Batman – the self-proclaimed guardian of justice who walks in the shadows like a nighttime specter. Yet, there’s another side to this hero that often goes unnoticed – a brighter, more vibrant aspect that warms our hearts. This unique take on the Dark Knight, affectionately known as “Rainbow Batman”, first graced the pages of Detective Comics #241 and has left an indelible mark on us ever since. Despite being one of the most unconventional portrayals of Batman to date, there have been numerous winks and nods towards this colorful character over the years – a version we long to see return!
Introducing: Rainbow Batman
For the first time, Rainbow Batman makes his appearance in Detective Comics #241, published in 1957 by Edmond Hamilton and Sheldon Moldoff. However, have you ever wondered how and why this multi-colored hero unexpectedly emerged? Let me clarify… The traditional Dark Knight transforms into a vibrant character to draw attention away from Robin’s injured arm.
Correct, you’ve understood it well. In comic book issue #241, Dick Grayson sustains an injury to his arm at the start of the story, while saving a young girl. Batman starts worrying that people might figure out that Dick is Robin due to this injury revealing his identity. To divert attention from Robin’s wound and protect his secret identity, Batman decides to wear bright and colorful costumes when he’s with Robin. This is intended to draw focus away from the sidekick’s hurt arm.
However, for our rainbow-loving followers, the tale takes a vibrant turn: Eventually, Batman adorns a suit sporting all hues of the rainbow simultaneously. This extraordinary change occurs during his battles against the villains responsible for Dick’s injury. Once Dick recovers fully, Batman reverts to his traditional outfit, relinquishing his multi-colored attire in favor of darkness again.
If the idea of Rainbow Batman seems a bit unusual to you, don’t be concerned – it leaves even Robin puzzled at times, as he once asks Batman, “Why?” regarding his choice of multi-colored suits. However, when you understand that it was all for his sidekick, this peculiar tale of Rainbow Batman becomes a heartwarming story about loyalty and friendship that is bound to touch yours.
Rainbows Return to Batman with the Rainbow Creature
In the Batman comics over time, it wasn’t just Rainbow Batman who brought a splash of color to the narrative. Three years after Rainbow Batman made his debut, another character burst onto the scene with vibrant hues that filled us with delight and offered an exhilarating tale. This newcomer, who first appeared in the 1960 issue of Batman Volume 1 #134, instead of bringing warmth to our hearts, instilled a shiver of fear deep within us. Known as the Rainbow Creature, this character was far from friendly.
Hailing from a South American volcano, the multi-hued adversary known as the Rainbow Beast poses a threat to both Batman and Robin. Its skin color spectrum stretches from red to blue, and each hue corresponds to unique abilities it possesses. When one of these powers is activated, the beast transforms into a pure white form. This creature employs its colors for the following extraordinary abilities:
- Red: Fire projection
- Blue: Freezing nearby objects
- Yellow: Vaporizing nearby objects
- Green: Making organisms temporarily two-dimensional (which it uses on both Batman and Robin as it makes an escape in the comic)
In a later episode of “Batman: The Brave and the Bold”, not only does the Rainbow Batman, but also the Rainbow Creature transition from comic books to television screens. During this episode, Batman dons a multi-colored suit to gain resistance against any assaults by the Rainbow Creature. There’s nothing more awesome than watching a vibrant Batman deliver rainbow-tinted punches!
Rainbow Batman Returns!
Rainbow Batman hasn’t disappeared without a trace. In fact, there have been hints and references to this vibrant character in more recent times. For instance, the 2014 video game LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham featured an in-game expansion where players could control Rainbow Batman and Rainbow Raider. This special costume gave him the unique ability to deflect laser beams. Later on, in 2019, it was announced at San Diego’s Comic-Con International that Rainbow Batman would have his own action figure from DC Collectibles. Additionally, other figures have portrayed the character over the years, such as a Funko! Pop figurine of Batman Rainbow.
The Rainbow Batman has left an indelible impression and remains as mysterious as his traditional dark attire. He’s not just a Batman deserving of affection in June, but year-round adoration. Here’s hoping he makes another appearance in the pages of DC Comics soon.
