Ratliff Brothers’ Unexpected Kiss Shifts Power Dynamics in The White Lotus Episode 5

The ongoing third season of “The White Lotus” leaves viewers on edge as the bond between brothers Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger) and Lochlan (Sam Nivola) deepens, taking their relationship to new levels in the most recent episode.

In simple terms, the issue of their relationship was initially questioned after Lochlan’s intense gaze at a naked Saxon in the first episode, and subsequent scenes have shown Saxon attempting to assert power over his younger brother, raising questions about the exact nature of their bond.

He’s not the only one, however, with a battle for influence being fought by obnoxious, hyper-masculine Saxon and his intellectual sister Piper (Sarah Catherine Hook), who wants Lochlan to follow a more thoughtful and spiritual path in life.

As I write this, it seems she’s struggling in her battle, as Saxon and Lochlan are deep into an all-night celebration. The balance of power that once defined their relationship appears to be changing subtly during this festive occasion.

In the recent episode, Saxon’s actions from the past, which involved encouraging his younger brother to drink and pursue women, come back to haunt him. To everyone’s surprise, Lochlan, who had been reserved earlier, suddenly blossoms out of his shell.

As the brothers and their companions, Chloe (Charlotte Le Bon) and Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood), make their entrance, the atmosphere intensifies when they reach a lively full moon gathering where everyone’s there to have fun.

After spending the day aboard a lavish yacht, Lochlan slurred out a remark that, while lacking immediate context, appeared to influence the direction the evening took.

“One day,” he says to Saxon, timidly, “I’m gonna take you down.”

Saxon laughs off the comment, but Lochlan continues to push boundaries over the course of the night, starting from when Chloe offers them an unspecified pill for the rave.

Instead of taking the drug right away, the younger Ratliff shows little hesitation, which leaves his older brother feeling frustrated because he had intended to refuse it (viewing his own strength and manliness as an alternative to the drug, in a rather embarrassing statement).

Nevertheless, Saxon ultimately succumbs to peer pressure and, later on, we see the Ratliff boys feeling the effects of the pill during a firework display on the beach, where Lochlan is caressing the hair of his intoxicated brother.

At the close of the show, the team returns to their yacht and engages in a game similar to spin-the-bottle, which primarily involves sharing kisses among participants.

Chloe picks on Saxon and Lochlan to kiss each other; they initially oblige with a quick peck on the lips. But when urged to do more, Lochlan grabs his brother’s face and gives him an extended snog that doesn’t appear to be consensual.

The moment sends Chloe into hysterical laughter, while Chelsea appears comically freaked out.

The most revealing responses, nonetheless, come from the brothers themselves: Saxon appears stunned, puzzled, and evidently uneasy about the recent events, whereas Lochlan smirks and continues sipping from his bottle.

There certainly is a power imbalance in this disconcerting scenario, but contrary to viewer speculation, it seems that Lochlan is actually the more self-assured and, potentially, predatory brother of the two.

In next week’s installment of The White Lotus, we’ll need to find out where this peculiar and disquieting interaction will lead.

Essentially, Saxon seems to have a misguided understanding of masculinity and self-identity, which he’s attempting to instill in his younger brother.
