It seems that EastEnders has unmasked the real person behind the mystery of Shireen Bashar’s vanishing, who was Harry Mitchell’s girlfriend.
The BBC One soap has aired a long-running mystery surrounding the backstory of Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway) as the hot-headed mechanic has been previously accused of being responsible for his girlfriend Shireen Bashar’s disappearance years prior.
Last year, Penny Branning (Kitty Castledine) had her doubts about Harry’s innocence, and he ended up being arrested in connection with Shireen’s disappearance. However, he was eventually cleared of charges thanks to an alibi provided by his manipulative mother, Nicola Mitchell (Laura Doddington).
Last week, Nicola attempted to hide the truth behind the paternity of her younger son Barney Mitchell (Lewis Bridgeman) – that Zack Hudson (James Farrar) is biological father and not Teddy Mitchell (Roland Manookian) – by warning Zack and his sister Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) that Teddy had Shireen killed.
After witnessing Teddy’s anger when he found out about Sharon’s infidelity, Zack and Sharon decided to keep quiet to avoid upsetting him further. They had seen a darker side of Teddy last week, one they didn’t want to provoke again.
In Monday’s episode, while Nicola attempted to play happy families with ex-husband Teddy and her sons, it became clear that Harry was haunted by the fourth anniversary of Shireen’s disappearance.
At the Arches, where he was finding it tough to cope, Harry was taken aback when Shireen’s sibling, Asad (also known as Aslan Amjad), along with his old friend, dropped by unexpectedly.
They met up cheerfully, and Asad confided that he no longer suspected Harry of murdering Shireen but shared the hardships his family had endured since her disappearance – his father losing their business and his mother unable to get out of bed due to deep depression.
Asad spent more time with Harry, catching up and asking after Teddy.
Stopping by at Harry’s barn, Asad got a chance to meet Harry’s mom, Nicola, once again. During their encounter, Nicola inquired about his return and it became evident that Asad needed some clarification.
When Teddy arrived, Asad then accused the new Mitchell patriarch of having killed Shireen – noting that her car had been followed on CCTV by heavies who had worked for Teddy on a building project.
Teddy asserted that he had no part in Shireen’s vanishing, mentioning that he was abroad at the time the incident occurred.
While Asad lunged for Teddy, Harry defended his father, but Asad remained determined to get justice for his sister and departed.
At home later on, Harry openly expressed his concerns about his father, mentioning he was aware of the actions Teddy might take if anyone obstructed him.
Nicola leapt to Teddy’s defence and also noted how she had protected Harry when questions were directed at him, too.
After Harry departed, Teddy steadfastly maintained his innocence and pledged to uncover the truth about Shireen’s situation.
At last, by the end of the episode, it became apparent that Nicola had a clandestine encounter with a secretive individual called Benji (played by Carl Prekopp). During this meeting in a vehicle, she shared her apprehensions about the potential exposure of a hidden truth.
As Benji continued to avoid the topic at hand, it was Nicola who disclosed her urgent need to find out where Shireen currently is, and then she gave him a stack of money.
Benji then revealed, “Paradise Park. Industrial estate, right outside of Dartford. It’s been derelict for years. Don’t worry, ain’t nobody gonna dig up your little secret there.”
As the episode concluded, Nicola responded gravely: “I hope so, for your sake as well as mine. I am just getting my family back on track; they can never know I killed that girl, or I’ll lose them forever.”
It transpired that it was indeed Nicola who committed the murder of Shireen. Her initial claim that Teddy was the culprit was merely a ploy to frighten Sharon and Zack.
