Next Metro PS5 Game Reworked to Tell Darker Story as Series Turns 15

Metro developer 4A Games has shared a new update on the next mainline franchise in its FPS series as it celebrates 15 years since the release of the original, Metro 2033. Expanding on what it said in 2022, the Ukrainian studio has changed the story of the next game as a result of the Russian invasion of its country.

In a statement posted to its official website, the team is drawing from its experiences in Ukraine over the past few years to create a darker story. “As art became life for many of our developers in Ukraine, we drew from that lived experience to create an even darker story, those themes already present in Metro becoming ever-more apparent and important.”

Working alongside novelist Dmitry Glukhovsky, the “hard-hitting, political, anti-war” themes of the series will continue. “Dmitry has always spoken out against the war in Ukraine from the start — a courageous decision for any russian, that has seen him sentenced to jail (in absentia) — and we are proud to have him as a friend and co-creator as we tell this next, and never more relevant chapter of Metro together.”

4A Games has both the next Metro instalment and a new IP in production, and it’s working through “missile strikes, air-raid sirens, and terror still raining down on Ukraine” to complete them. The studio adds that it’s “as safe as possible” but wishes to manage expectations around the full reveal of the next Metro game.

The team at Reburn, a new development studio that spun off from 4A Games, has unveiled their upcoming game titled La Quimera. However, they haven’t given a specific release date yet, with the statement “it will be ready when it is ready”. They are eagerly anticipating your reaction to this new project.

Throughout 2025, the developer will be sharing “events, deals and celebratory content” on its social media channels to mark 15 years of the franchise. While the original Metro 2033 started out life as an Xbox 360, PC exclusive, it came to PS4 later on via the remastered Metro Redux collection, along with Metro: Last Light.
