1980’s comic book storyline, specifically issue #136 of X-Men, marked one of the final stages of “The Dark Phoenix Saga.” After Jean Grey appeared to die heroically in issue #101, sacrificing herself while piloting a spacecraft back to Earth, she was reborn as the embodiment of fire and life: the Phoenix. It was later disclosed that Jean had merged with a powerful cosmic entity — the Phoenix Force — which had corrupted her into the “Dark Phoenix.” Tragically, it was this Dark Phoenix persona who perished in issue #137, while the actual Jean lay dormant for years within a healing cocoon. Eventually, she was discovered by the Avengers.
In this moment of your transformation, Jean Grey, our connection – forged by fervor, refined by affection – serves as a vessel for an extraordinary power. Remember, the blaze I bestow can both ignite and comfort, destroy and mend. It’s a force capable of consumption. The splendor it offers is beyond comparison; so too is the risk. Once embraced, this fire will forever burn within you.
After enduring numerous transformations, much like a Phoenix rising from its own ashes, I found myself resurrected, while one life – my dear sister Sara Grey, whose end came in issue #36 of X-Men back in 1994 – remains forever lost to me.
Approximately three decades have passed, and character Sara Grey is set to make a comeback in the current run of the Phoenix, penned by writer Stephanie Phillips, with artist Roi Mercado joining soon (from the upcoming series Venom War: Deadpool)).
Following her transformation from a cocoon and reaching her strongest combat form against Aldani and the Dark Gods (in issue #8 of Phoenix), the upcoming Phoenix arc will bring Jean’s sister back into the story in issue #11, due in May. Issue #12, slated for June, will narrate the “extraordinary” tale of Sara’s resurrection.
Phillips stated that, since Jean’s life narrative is heavily influenced by resurrection, it’s profoundly intimate to request her to face the reappearance of someone she thought was gone forever. This predicament makes Jean wrestle with more than just the burden of the Phoenix; it delves into the universal struggle between duty and yearning. Can she manage the cosmic task she has been given while also trying to regain what she once lost?
In issue #136 of X-Men, Jean Grey’s older sibling, Sara, was introduced for the first time as the Dark Phoenix paid a visit to the Grey household in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, preceding her selfless act in issue #137. A character seldom seen, Sara reappeared in 1986’s X-Factor #12 when Jean, who had emerged from her psychological cocoon a year prior in Fantastic Four #286, was collaborating with Cyclops, Beast, Angel, and Iceman as X-Factor. Jean admitted to experiencing a sense of detachment from her family after spending several years within the cocoon following what seemed like her demise.
As a passionate movie buff immersed in the X-Men universe, let me share an intriguing twist from the comics: In issue #36, it was unveiled that the Phalanx, these relentless hunters after mutants, were on a mission to incorporate all Earth life into their intelligent techno-organic mass as part of the “Phalanx Covenant” event. Shockingly, I discovered that Jean Grey’s elder sister was among those ensnared by the Phalanx in this chilling tale.
In 2005, during issue #467 of the Uncanny X-Men comic, the Shi’ar, an expansive alien civilization, decided to eradicate the Grey genome. As a result, John and Elaine Grey, parents of Sara and Jean, along with Sara’s children, Gailyn and Joseph, who were also part of the Grey family, were tragically murdered by the Shi’ar.

Across the vast expanse of the cosmos, I, Ego – the Living Planet, cry out in distress. An overwhelming imbalance, a fracturing, and the looming specter of death are upon us. Only one being can possibly halt this catastrophe – the Phoenix! However, there’s more to this tale than meets the eye. In this fresh arc, Jean Grey’s cosmic calling and duty towards the galaxy take on a shockingly personal note as her long-lost loved one makes a return. This unexpected presence will send everything Jean has known into complete chaos!

Phoenix #12
As Phoenix, I’ve traversed the cosmos, witnessing an infinite tapestry of mystery and marvel – a universe brimming with endless potential! Yet, nothing prepared me for the extraordinary twist: My sister, Sara, has resurfaced after being taken by the Phalanx eons ago. Countless Greys have met untimely, brutal ends, but here stands my beloved sibling, thriving and whole. However, when? Why? How? These are questions that demand answers. And as I ponder over them, it’s clear this narrative would unfold quite differently if I didn’t.
