The last game originally launched for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) by Nintendo is being remade for contemporary systems in today’s era. Officially known as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, it first debuted in Japan in 1990, but didn’t hit U.S. shores until 1991. However, despite a year-long delay in its market launch, it sold significantly more units in North America than any other region worldwide.
The SNES reached its peak during the period from 1990 to 1996, with 1996 marking its replacement by the N64. By the end of the 90s, new games for the SNES were scarce. However, the last game ever made for the SNES wasn’t released until 2013 – a run and gun action game called Nightmare Busters, developed by Arcade Zone and Super Fighter Team. The development of this game began in 1994, but it wasn’t until 2013, 14 years after the SNES was discontinued in 1999, that it finally saw the light of day. This delay occurred because the game was initially set to be distributed by Sony, but their relationship with Nintendo soured following the release of the PlayStation, leading Sony to cease publishing games on Nintendo platforms. Consequently, Nightmare Busters lost its publisher and the developer had to eventually shut down due to the inability to publish the game.
2013 saw me eagerly anticipating the return of a classic gaming console with the re-release of what would become the last SNES game ever published – quite an exciting moment for me, as it had been 15 years since the previous final SNES title, Frogger, hit the market in 1998.
2021 marked the announcement of the game’s remake, and we anticipate a teaser trailer to be unveiled shortly. It has also been confirmed that the remake will be playable on PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation systems upon its release; however, the exact date is yet to be determined.
The description for Nightmare Busters Rebirth says it’s modeled after legendary arcade games. In this game, you’ll be drawn into a captivating world blending the supernatural with nonstop action. You’ll assume the role of Flynn and Floyd, leprechaun siblings who hunt nightmares. Travel through various landscapes, challenge your reaction speed against endless waves of adversaries and formidable bosses! The game offers fast-paced action, vibrant visuals, and a unique art style that fuses traditional hand-drawing methods with modern technology. This side-scrolling shoot ’em up is sure to excite fans of the genre.
