Christina Applegate is getting candid about her MS journey.
A former star of “Married with Children,” who has publicly shared her struggle with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), discussed the ways this condition has affected her digestive system and required numerous hospital visits in search of solutions.
For the past three years, since I was diagnosed, I’ve spent more than 30 hospital visits due to recurring vomiting, diarrhea, and pain, as Christina, aged 53, shared on her podcast with Jamie-Lynn Sigler called “MesSy,” on March 19th. This is an incredibly challenging situation, I assure you. They’ve subjected me to every possible medical test and administered a significant amount of radiation into my body from CT scans and other procedures.
In 2021, Christina, who suffers from a long-term autoimmune disorder affecting the brain, spinal cord, and central nervous system, shared that she’s now linked her digestive problems to her health condition, as physicians had previously disregarded her earlier concerns.
Recently, within the last month, I’ve come to understand something, as the star of Dead to Me shared. Now, this might not be the case, but I feel compelled to share it with you. I suggest discussing motility issues with your doctor, if you haven’t already, because multiple sclerosis can sometimes cause a slowing of organ function, though not complete failure.
She admitted that she has an unusual situation where, if she needs to use the restroom for a bowel movement, she becomes nauseous and vomits instead. After vomiting, she experiences discomfort and various other symptoms follow.
Christina urged people to discuss any concerns related to their health conditions with their physicians, explaining that she intends to leverage this shared experience to speak up on her behalf and address her recurring symptoms.
She clarified that you should consult your doctor about it. On Thursday, she’s having a colonoscopy and intends to discuss her concerns with the medical professionals. Despite their belief that she may be overreacting, she feels she has noticed a recurring pattern.
Christina mentioned, “My neurologist, bless her heart, tells me that’s not typical of MS.” Therefore, I must apologize but there seems to be a connection here, and please remember, I’m not a medical professional. I’m merely suggesting you consider this possibility because I find myself in the same predicament, and it’s bothersome and frightening.
Keeping it light, she then joked about how she really feels about this particular symptom.
She remarked, “Has it ever happened to you that you’ve experienced both vomiting and diarrhea simultaneously? That’s something I find particularly fascinating, even attractive.
Moreover, although she clarified that she’s not a healthcare expert offering medical advice about MS symptoms, she did offer one crucial tip that has been beneficial for her during difficult times.
She suggested, “It’s beneficial to keep a small waste bin near your toilet for convenience. You can dispose of waste and clean up easily without creating a mess. I used one the day before yesterday.

Christina Applegate shared she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021.
Hello everyone! Around a few months back, I was identified with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This past August, I openly discussed my diagnosis on social media. It’s been an unusual voyage for me, but I have been incredibly heartened by the people I know who also live with this condition, offering their support. The path has been challenging, no doubt, but as you all understand, life’s journey doesn’t stop unless someone deliberately puts up obstacles.
During her induction at the Hollywood Walk of Fame in November 2022, she humorously mentioned, “Guess what? I have a health issue,” referring to her Multiple Sclerosis (MS) diagnosis. “Perhaps you didn’t catch it, but I’m making a statement by not wearing shoes today.
Christina believes her MS journey actually began “six or seven years” before her 2021 diagnosis.
During an interview on Good Morning America in March 2024, Christina shared her experience while working on Dead to Me. She mentioned that while filming, particularly during the first season, her leg would suddenly give out. At first, she attributed it to fatigue, dehydration, or weather conditions. However, for months afterwards, nothing seemed amiss, and she didn’t give it much thought.
As I eagerly awaited the third and final season of her Netflix series, I could hardly believe my eyes when I heard her reveal that by then, she would be making her way onto set, not on her own two feet, but comfortably seated in a wheelchair.
“I couldn’t move that far,” she recalled, “so I had to tell everybody because I needed help.”
The actress from the show Dead to Me posted a picture of her walking canes, saying that they have become a part of her everyday life as she navigates multiple sclerosis: “Now, I use walking sticks as a regular part of my routine.
Accompanied by her daughter, Sadie Grace LeNoble, Christina delivered a straightforward statement regarding Multiple Sclerosis at the 2023 SAG Awards: “MS, I give you the finger.
Following a heartfelt standing ovation at the 2023 Emmys, the former star of “Married…With Children” playfully commented, “You’re making me feel inadequate with your ability to stand, given my disability.
On the March 2024 episode of Armchair Expert, Christina expressed that she tells jokes about her condition as a way to breathe freely. In other words, if she doesn’t joke around, it feels suffocating for her and she needs to move on.
On that very podcast, I shared a heartfelt revelation about myself. You see, I’ve got thirty of these peculiar spots, or lesions, scattered across my brain. The most significant one resides behind my right eye, making it a constant battle to bear the persistent pain it brings.
According to the Multiple Sclerosis Trust, legions (lesions) occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective myelin coating surrounding nerve fibers.
Christina hasn’t held back when it comes to sharing her journey.
Speaking as a passionate admirer, let me share a heartfelt sentiment: The esteemed actress from Anchorman candidly shared with Jimmy Kimmel her challenging daily battles with Multiple Sclerosis. To set the record straight, I’m not pulling any punches here – anyone grappling with MS won’t likely claim it as the best thing that ever happened to them!
During a conversation about her daily life with the illness in March 2024, Christina expressed to Good Morning America, “I’m living something like a nightmare.
She mentioned, “However, I may find myself in a position where I can perform slightly better,” she continued. “At the moment, I’m choosing solitude as my coping mechanism, staying put due to my reluctance to go out. It’s tough.
Christina acknowledged that her “Sweetest Thing” co-star, Selma Blair (diagnosed with MS in 2018), inspired her to undergo testing for the disease by encouraging her to do so.
During her interview on GMA, Christina remembered saying, “She advised you to have an examination for Multiple Sclerosis.” Without her, the situation might have turned out much more severe.
Christina stated that it’s highly probable that “Dead to Me” will mark her final on-screen appearance. She shared this with Vanity Fair in May 2023, expressing that she finds it hard to envision herself going to set at the moment.
Speaking as an ardent admirer, let me share a heartfelt sentiment: It seems highly unlikely that I’ll grace the screens in front of the camera once more, but I can’t help but feel immensely grateful for having shared this journey with Linda Cardellini – arguably the most exceptional actress I’ve ever had the privilege to work alongside. If not the most remarkable human being I’ve encountered, she certainly ranks among the very top.
