Developers at GSC Game World, working on The Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl, have faced numerous challenges. With the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, approximately 200 team members decided to move to Prague, Czech Republic, maintaining connections with their counterparts in Kyiv. In theory, this move was intended to facilitate a smoother development process, but an unexpected event – a large fire in the Prague office – added yet another hurdle to their plans.
2023 saw a fire erupt in the server room of an office building in Prague, affecting one floor significantly. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Pictures taken after the incident reveal charred areas and ash scattered on the ground. GSC Game World CEO Ievgen Grygorovych appears to see this event as a hidden opportunity, as he shared his thoughts during the latest TopMob Insider documentary.
As a gamer, I can say that going through that ordeal really toughened us up. We got a glimpse of potential future challenges, and now we know better – we’re determined to prevent such situations from recurring in the future.
Indeed, the accident took a financial toll, no doubt about it. Not only did my beloved server crash to the floor and get damaged beyond repair, but unfortunately, my fellow developers’ computers sustained damage as well. Quite a blow for us all!
Community Manager Yevhen Bazarov expressed that rebuilding the game once more was another hurdle to overcome, which turned out to be an unexpected task.
Though he now finds humor in the situation, film artistic director Ingwar Dovgoteles had been working on a project for the cinematic department that lasted approximately three days. He completed it late the night of the fire. Around 15 minutes after returning home, he received a call from the office stating everything he had worked on was destroyed.
Dovgoteles continued, ‘Everything I worked on was completed in three days, thoroughly documented. Yet it seemed like all that effort had been for naught.’
Luckily for me, even after another hurdle, Stalker 2 finally dropped in late 2024, and it made our top list for the best games of that year. For an inside look at how the studio persevered to complete the game amidst their home being seized by Russian forces, check out the full TopMob Insider episode above.
