The King of the Monsters is a Real Star in Godzilla vs America: Los Angeles (Early Review)

This year, Godzilla is causing a sensation across America, particularly with IDW’s Godzilla vs. America series. After leaving his mark on Chicago, everyone’s beloved monster is eyeing Los Angeles next. The comic book, Godzilla vs. America: Los Angeles, hits shelves on April 30th. This issue, penned by local talents Gabriel Hardman, Jordan Morris & Nicole Goux, Dave Baker, and J. Gonzo, offers more than just a sun-drenched tale of Godzilla. Instead of simply wreaking havoc, this time, he’s contributing to the community – 100% of the proceeds from the issue will go to the Binc Foundation to support Los Angeles’ comic and book stores affected by recent wildfires. By giving back, Godzilla is making an already exciting story even better.

Due to the early nature of this review, with the final order deadline set for March 24th, we’re keeping the spoilers under wraps. However, it’s not a secret that Godzilla vs. America: Los Angeles embodies the essence of top-tier Godzilla tales and the soul of what makes Los Angeles exceptional. Each narrative in this issue serves as a heartfelt ode to a distinct aspect of LA. The first story, penned by Gabriel Hardman, is particularly action-packed, focusing on two traffic reporters who unexpectedly become ground-level witnesses – or kaiju observers if you will – allowing them to step up and be true heroes in the process. This tale carries the vibe and aesthetic of a classic Godzilla film, establishing that anything can happen when Godzilla and the City of Angels intersect.

In the upcoming tale, “The Big Break” penned by Jordan Morris and Nicole Goux, dreams are pursued, Hollywood is conquered (with a twist), and Godzilla makes an unexpected appearance. This captivating journey offers a blend of raw industry struggles and optimism, all while keeping you entertained. It’s the wittiest story in the collection, taking readers on a guided tour of Los Angeles by Dave Baker, complete with a dose of city history disguised as a survival guide for navigating the metro system during a Godzilla attack. It’s smart, funny, and packed with useful information, acting as both an ode to LA’s underappreciated public transit system and Godzilla himself.

Essentially, “Godzilla vs. America: Los Angeles” offers an enjoyable experience. Although Godzilla is the destructive force wreaking havoc in the City of Angels, much like dream-chasers who flock to the city, he’s not the main attraction. Instead, it’s Los Angeles that takes center stage, showcasing aspects of the city that highlight its unique charm and why it stands out from any other place on earth. Moreover, the book serves as a tribute to the city while also raising funds for wildfire recovery efforts. So, one might be willing to overlook Godzilla’s rampage through Hollywood – at least until he moves on to challenge another American city.
