In the world of Monster Hunter Wilds, Bird Wyverns are scarcer than one might anticipate if you’re transitioning from earlier series installments. Despite their scarcity, by the time you meet them for the first time, they present a more formidable challenge compared to most monsters encountered during the initial stages of the game.
In our Monster Hunter Wilds Bird Wyvern guide, we break down the types of monsters that belong to this category and provide insights on what you can anticipate from each one.
All Bird Wyverns in Monster Hunter Wilds
Initially, previous Monster Hunter games featured many Bird Wyverns, particularly in early stages and tutorial quests, with creatures like Jaggi, Wroggi, Great Izuchi, and Pukei-Pukei commonly appearing in lower level quests. However, this is not the case in Wilds. In fact, it takes clearing the main story campaign to access high rank environments before encountering a Bird Wyvern. At launch, only two types of Bird Wyverns can be found in Wilds.
Yian Kut-Ku
Immediately following the end credits, your mission begins: tracking down the fiery Yian Kut-Ku. This bird isn’t just dangerous due to the balls of fire it shoots at you; it can also knock you off balance during its rages, leading to potential harm. To make matters worse, after a rage, it may follow up with a fireball attack, making it a formidable adversary. You can find this monster in both the Iceshard Cliffs and Scarlet Forest. Interestingly, while it’s weak against thunder and ice attacks, it is not vulnerable to water-based assaults.
Gypceros
Gypceros, a formidable foe, regularly administers poison with its charging attack and has the ability to stun you with a swift strike and lash out at a distance using its tail. Known for its speed and evasiveness, it frequently retreats, making teaming up with friends in multiplayer mode an effective strategy for a quicker fight. This monster is vulnerable to fire attacks and can be found almost anywhere except the Scarlet Forest. Weapons similar to those of Yian Kut-Ku or Brute Wyvern Quematrice are recommended for this encounter.
