1923 might be the darkest entry in Taylor Sheridan’s ever-expanding Yellowstone TV franchise.
In the harsh, relentless cold of a Montana winter, no character seems to find respite, as danger looms from all sides and the specter of malice hovers over every corner. The sense of constant peril is palpable – even death may not be the worst fate that awaits them. This isn’t a series for those with delicate constitutions.
However, surpassing the usual intensity of the series, Alex’s continuing narrative – her trek across America to meet Spencer in Montana – has reached unparalleled heights, and the most recent episode only intensified the distressing nature of her tale.
To this point, Alex’s journey, starting with confirming her pregnancy at the beginning of the season and traveling from her English home to Montana, has been marked by appalling humiliation and mistreatment from American immigration officials. This was followed by a brutal attack in New York City, where she was robbed of all her money, leaving her on the edge of her endurance.
In the gripping second season of 1923, I find myself huddled aboard a rattling train, mirroring the journey of my character, Alex, as she steadily moves forward on her path.
Struggling to make ends meet, I found myself taking a job on a train in haste. However, my situation took an unsettling twist as I crossed paths with a truly menacing traveler. It didn’t take long for him to mark me as his next target.

Following an unintentional spill of a hot beverage on him, he pushed her hand towards his groin area. In another instance, he slid his hand up her thigh and allegedly sexually harassed her. She retaliated by physically attacking him, inflicting serious injuries upon him in response.
Later on, Alex was quickly apprehended by the train’s security personnel, almost facing arrest by the Chicago police officers.
Fortunately, she was rescued by two compassionate British individuals who supported her and validated her account of the situation.
Nevertheless, Alex was left incredibly shaken, no doubt traumatised, by her experience.
During a challenging phase where Alex faced many tough situations, causing discomfort for viewers, this string of distressing events only added to the grimness of Alex’s narrative. Since parting ways with Spencer, Alex’s character has endured hardships that could be described as traversing through the depths of hell and returning.
It appears that this entire situation is building towards a profound release of emotion for Alex as she eventually makes it to the Dutton’s ranch in Montana, where she will be reunited with her husband – thus justifying the harrowing ordeal she has endured.
However, these intense and unyielding scenes aren’t easier to bear, given their frequency. It’s hard to watch the beloved character Alex, who typically provides emotional depth to the show, suffer through such persistent mistreatment.
Although these relentless scenes don’t become any less challenging to watch, it’s particularly distressing to see a cherished character like Alex, who usually anchors the series emotionally, endure such prolonged cruelty.
Hopefully, things begin to get better for Alex from here on out.
