Chadwick Boseman, who recently passed away, was an exceptionally talented and adaptable actor whose remarkable screen presence will be remembered for years to come due to his many outstanding performances. Starting out as a stage actor, he garnered growing recognition as his film career took off. His breakthrough came when he was cast as T’Challa, or Black Panther, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a role that ultimately defined him following numerous appearances in the franchise. Regrettably, just as his career was reaching unprecedented success, Boseman died from colon cancer in 2020 at the age of 43.
Millions of moviegoers and colleagues continue to grieve over the death of Chadwick Boseman. Although Black Panther is undoubtedly his most famous role, Boseman’s talent was evident in numerous other parts he played. Here are three memorable performances by Chadwick Boseman that remain fondly remembered:
1. Jackie Robinson in “42” (2013)
2. James Brown in “Get on Up” (2014)
3. Thurgood Marshall in “Marshall” (2017)
42 (2013)
Chadwick Boseman made a strong debut as a leading actor in the 2013 film “42,” where he portrayed legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson, marking one of his most significant career achievements. The movie, set in 1947, tells the story of Robinson, who gets an opportunity to play at the highest level when he is chosen by Branch Rickey (played by Harrison Ford) to join the Brooklyn Dodgers. As a Black man entering the major leagues, Robinson knew he would face considerable resistance. “42” skillfully blends uplifting sports drama, World War II-era atmosphere, and an inspiring biography into a captivating account of Jackie Robinson’s struggle against racial prejudice.
In “42”, Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford deliver standout performances, portraying Robinson and Rickey – two individuals on a deeply emotional battlefield, knowing that Robinson would bear the brunt of the struggle. The story of Jackie Robinson’s triumph over adversity through self-restraint continues to resonate strongly today. Boseman masterfully breathes life into this iconic sports figure in “42”, cementing its position as the top baseball movie of the 21st century so far.
Black Panther (2018)
Following a stunning supporting act in “Captain America: Civil War” in 2016, Chadwick Boseman’s character T’Challa took center stage in his own Marvel Cinematic Universe film, “Black Panther,” which turned into an unprecedented cultural sensation and box office juggernaut. As the king of the secluded African nation Wakanda, T’Challa encounters a fresh challenge from a previously unknown cousin, Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), who seeks to seize the throne and use Wakanda’s formidable Vibranium weaponry against the world. “Black Panther” stands out as a brilliant addition to the MCU and a compelling precursor to 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War.” Boseman’s regal grace as T’Challa is both mesmerizing in the moment and poignant when reflecting on the impact he could have continued to bring to the character following his unfortunate passing, leaving fans yearning for more of his commanding performance after “Black Panther.
Much like Michael B. Jordan steals the show as the complex character of Killmonger, his portrayal was widely praised as one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s better villains. Jordan brought depth and nuance to Killmonger, making him a compelling mix of charismatic, endearing, and heart-wrenching. Although there were some issues with CGI in the third act, Black Panther remains an excellent superhero film and an opportunity to witness Chadwick Boseman delivering a career-best performance, unfortunately cut short by his untimely passing.
21 Bridges (2019)
In 2019, Chadwick Boseman transitioned from portraying a superhero to an action hero in the police movie “21 Bridges.” This role demonstrated both the dramatic depth and physical agility that he could bring to both genres. In this film, Boseman plays NYPD detective Andre Davis, who heads up the task force aimed at capturing two drug dealers responsible for killing several officers during a botched deal. As all 21 bridges in Manhattan are closed off, Davis leads the NYPD in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse and uncovers a much larger conspiracy. Boseman delivers a composed, reserved performance as Davis, a cop who reluctantly embraces his growing reputation on the force, still troubled by the death of his father in the line of duty since his childhood.
In the gritty, swift-moving narrative of “21 Bridges,” Davis and his team of officers find themselves in a frantic chase against time to nab the culprits before the citywide lockdown is lifted at 5 a.m. The climax of “21 Bridges” offers an unexpected twist: instead of a gunfight, Davis discovers the root of the drug trafficking and confronts the suspects in a thought-provoking debate about the depths of poverty’s despair and the questionable ethical lines one may cross while striving to escape such hardship. Reminiscent of ’90s action films and cop dramas, “21 Bridges” is a gripping thriller and showcases the late Chadwick Boseman’s range and on-screen charisma.
