Warning: Spoilers for Sunrise on the Reaping below.
If you’re a fan of The Hunger Games and wondering about the latest on characters Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, rest assured that things look promising for you!
Although “Sunrise on the Reaping,” written by Suzanne Collins, occurs over 25 years before Katniss and Peeta’s revolution, it offers a peek into their later lives in the epilogue. This glimpse shows how they adjust to their new normal after the conclusion of the original trilogy.
Throughout approximately 400 pages in the prequel, Collins meticulously details the atrocities Haymitch experiences, starting with being chosen as a tribute on his sixteenth birthday and leading up to the brutal aftermath that ensues. However, the most heinous act Snow inflicts upon him is that, having miraculously triumphed in the Games, Haymitch returns home only to discover the heart-wrenching deaths of his family and girlfriend Lenore Dove.
Although the loss of his girlfriend is what ultimately pushes him towards alcoholism, Collins doesn’t leave us on a depressing note. Instead, she provides a glimpse into his future—one hinted at in “Mockingjay”: A life where Katniss and Peeta serve as his unconventional family.
In the concluding part of the story, Collins brings us back to a post-revolution District 12. Here, she gives us a peek into Katniss and Peeta’s life as a couple. Moreover, Haymitch, who has been guarded all along, opens up more than ever before, revealing details about his personal life. This includes his relationship with his brother Sid, BFF Burdock Everdeen (who is none other than Katniss’ father), and an unexpected connection he forged with District 12’s former antagonist, Maysilee Donner, during their time in the arena.
In the concluding chapter, Haymitch firmly declares that he had no intention of contributing to their memorial book following the war. He questions the purpose and value of such a reminder, as it only serves to resurface the pain of loss. However, when Burdock’s page appeared, he found it necessary to acknowledge his help in locating the grave. Additionally, he felt an obligation to share the stories of Maysilee Donner, the previous mockingjay pin owner, and Sid, who cherished the stars, with others.
Once Katniss and Peeta become aware of Lenora Dove’s past, specifically her goose caretaking and the role played by Katniss’ deceased father, Burdock, in helping Haymitch discover her concealed burial site, the duo promptly jump into a flurry of activity.
By entrusting Haymitch with a group of geese, Katniss and Peeta essentially return a part of Haymitch’s past with Lenora Dove to him. As Haymitch notes, “Just like the geese, we were bound together for life.
Eventually, Haymitch comes to understand the similarities between him and Katniss: their strong-willed nature, the shared pain they felt after losing so many people, and how she succeeded where he failed by instigating a rebellion.
Haymitch acknowledges, “She’s not straightforward; Peeta often compares her to me. However, she was more intelligent than I or perhaps just luckier.” He also points out, referring to the selection process, “It was her who prevented the dawn from breaking in the reaping.

By entrusting Haymitch with their own flock of geese, Katniss and Peeta effectively returned a part of Haymitch’s past with Lenora Dove to him. In his words, “Just like the geese, we truly were bound together for life.
Eventually, Haymitch comes to understand that there are striking similarities between him and Katniss: their strong-willed natures, the manner in which they both coped with loss by almost everyone, and how she ultimately succeeded where he failed in instigating a revolution.
Haymitch acknowledges that she’s not an easy individual; Peeta often compares her to him. Yet, he concedes she was wiser than him or perhaps just more fortunate,” Haymitch admits, further stating that during the reaping, “She was the one who managed to keep the sun from rising.

We truly mean it when we say that every young actress vied for the chance to portray Katniss Everdeen, the bow-and-arrow wielding heroine in “The Hunger Games”. Among the many contenders were Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Emma Roberts, Saoirse Ronan, Chloë Grace Moretz, Jodelle Ferland, Lyndsy Fonseca, Emily Browning, Shailene Woodley, Kaya Scodelario and Troian Bellisario. However, director Gary Ross had Jennifer Lawrence in mind right from the start, as she eventually landed the role, earning an Oscar nomination for her performance.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in 2011, Ross confidently stated that he had chosen the perfect actor for the role of Katniss, and to him, there was no doubt who was the best fit. He went on to say that it was the easiest casting decision he’d ever made during his career.
Lawrence had reservations regarding the role because she was unsure about the level of fame that would come with it, similar to Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson from Twilight.)
At midnight in England, I was sound asleep when the call came through, Lawrence shared with MTV News. Overwhelmed by my affection for the books and the script, the opportunity just presented itself so suddenly, and the enormity of the decision was daunting. However, it was ultimately my mom, Karen Lawrence, who provided the support I needed to take on the movie role.
She accused me of hypocrisy, as I had claimed that the scale of a movie wasn’t important, yet I had expressed reluctance about doing studio films while pursuing indie projects. However, when she offered me a film I admired and I considered declining due to its smaller size, it made me realize that fear shouldn’t prevent me from opportunities. This incident taught me that I didn’t want my fear to hold me back from taking on something exciting. Yet, deep down, I yearned for the project – it was about addressing and overcoming those fears.
3. Following Lawrence being chosen as Katniss, the internet predictably reacted: It got upset because the 20-year-old actress was older than the character, who is 16 in the first book, and had blonde hair. However, Ross didn’t let the initial criticism faze him, stating to Entertainment Weekly that Suzanne Collins, the co-writer of the script for The Hunger Games, approved of Lawrence’s casting.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d express it like this: “Suzanne, in her wisdom, believed that Katniss, a character who ignites revolution, requires a certain level of maturity and strength. She wasn’t bothered by Jen’s age, but rather emphasized the importance of casting someone with the right experience for the role. In other words, she was vehemently against choosing an immature or underage actress for Katniss, fearing it would undermine the character’s impact.
4. Lawrence chose to disregard the feedback regarding her casting, as she told MTV News, “Nah, the internet is like a bottomless pit for me. I rarely venture into it.
She mentioned, “I hadn’t realized everyone was so upset about it until after I had my hair dyed. That’s when people said things like, ‘Wow, blonde hair can change to brown!’
5. For her initial movie, Lawrence earned only $500,000. However, in the sequel, 2013’s “Catching Fire”, she made a significant increase to $10 million.
6. Among the actors who auditioned for the role of Katniss’ District 12 tribute and eventual love interest Peeta Mellark, including Alexander Ludwig, Hunter Parrish, Lucas Till, and Evan Peters, it was Josh Hutcherson who was ultimately chosen for the part.
In a statement previously made, Ross expressed that casting Peeta was expected to be challenging, but felt fortunate they found an actor who perfectly portrayed the intricacies of this multi-dimensional character. He’s eagerly looking forward to collaborating with Josh on set.
7. As a die-hard fan of Gale Hawthorne, Katniss’ brooding childhood buddy, it was Liam Hemsworth who stole the show against contenders like David Henrie, Drew Roy, and Robbie Amell. Producer Nina Jacobson put it best when she said, “Gale is a man of few words, so we relied heavily on the actor’s ability to embody him subtly rather than through dialogue.” Liam managed to bring this nuanced portrayal to life so seamlessly in Suzanne Collins’ writing, making it feel as if Gale was speaking directly to us on the screen.
8. For the film, all three main actors needed to change their hair color. Chris Hemsworth, who is naturally blond, opted for a darker hue, Josh Hutcherson lightened his hair, and Jennifer Lawrence underwent an extensive process to find the perfect brunette shade.
Hairstylist and wig designer Linda Flowers disclosed to Cosmopolitan magazine in 2014 that they rented six $5,000 wigs in various shades of brown for a project. Ultimately, Ross chose the darkest shade as a reference when dyeing Lawrence’s hair, despite his preference for the lightest one.
9. To prepare for the physically demanding role, Lawrence underwent various workout methods.
She shared with MTV News that while there’s a lot of training involved, it’s actually quite enjoyable. For around six weeks now, she’s been practicing archery, rock climbing, tree climbing, combat, running, and vaulting. However, she also incorporates yoga and other activities to maintain her agility, just like a cat.
10. On the final day of her six-week training regimen, Lawrence collided with a wall while performing an exercise, which nearly caused a delay in the production schedule.
Lawrence shared with The Hollywood Reporter that he sprinted towards something and his foot didn’t lift off the ground, causing him to collide with a wall using his abdomen instead. His trainer initially feared he had ruptured his spleen. Consequently, he underwent a CAT scan and had to be inserted into a tube where they administered a burning liquid throughout his body. Thankfully, nothing was fractured, and Lawrence, who sustained only bruises, was able to carry on.
11. Before the films were shot, Hutcherson underwent rigorous preparation, as he mentioned to Collider in 2012, “I hadn’t done something like that for a movie before. I gained approximately 15 pounds of muscle, which meant a lot of eating chicken and following a diet high in protein and low in carbs.
12. Regarding Hemsworth, he shared that his elder brother, Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor, gave him unexpected guidance as he prepared for the film.
Chris Hemsworth shared that his brother had jokingly advised him to shed some pounds prior to a filming session, playfully commenting, “It’s called ‘The Hunger Games’, not ‘The Gorging Games’!” (as reported in The Hollywood Reporter).
About thirteen weeks into production, Lawrence unintentionally struck Hutcherson after a mishap where she kicked him in the head, causing him to lose consciousness.
In an interview with Yahoo, Hutcherson recounted an instance where a woman was acting quite confidently, as if she were some sort of martial arts expert like Jackie Chan. She performed these grandiose kicks and boasted that she could flip over him, even suggesting she could kick him over his head. However, her actions proved to be more than she could handle. In the process, she accidentally struck him on the temple, causing him to lose consciousness. When Hutcherson regained awareness, he found her crying and consoling him, as she was filled with remorse for her actions. He woke up with her still there, comforting him.
14. During the filming process in North Carolina, the team encountered scorching temperatures of up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, frequent rain showers, and occasional bear visits as they caught whiffs of food on the set.
15. Woody Harrelson initially declined the role of Katniss and Peeta’s drunken mentor Haymitch Abernathy twice, confessing in 2017 to The Hollywood Reporter that he didn’t foresee its massive success and thought it wasn’t a strong part. However, he admitted being wrong, as the role turned out to be excellent, and he was grateful for Gary Ross calling him.
16. Elizabeth Banks needed a daily manicure to maintain her character Effie Trinket, who was Katniss and Peeta’s escort from the Capitol. However, the elaborate nail designs were found to be rather inconvenient on the set.
In an interview with Collider in 2012, Banks expressed that he wasn’t able to perform basic tasks due to his condition. He had assistants who took care of everything for him. He couldn’t use his phone or even go to the bathroom on his own. Dressing up for his costume was also a challenge, taking him about 25 minutes. By the time he reached the lunch line, everyone else had finished eating and returned to their trailers. Banks lamented, “There’s no one to eat with! I just got here!
17. It’s interesting to note that Lenny Kravitz, who portrayed Katniss Everdeen’s stylist and trusted friend Cinna in the films, had a pre-existing relationship with Jennifer Lawrence. This connection was established through his daughter, Zoe Kravitz.
In 2012, he mentioned to HeyUGuys that “X-Men: First Class” was being filmed in London, but since he lived in Paris, the cast would travel by train and often stay at his house. As a result, he became acquainted with Jennifer, instantly falling for her charm. He described her as incredibly funny and entertaining, always making him laugh. So, they grew close over the weekends in Paris. It was amusing when he asked Gary who was playing Katniss, to which Gary replied “Jennifer Lawrence.” Gary appreciated their pre-existing relationship, believing it would be beneficial because he already viewed Jennifer like a daughter and this bond would make working together smoother.
In 2013, during the 55th Annual Grammy Awards, the original song “Safe & Sound,” which Taylor Swift co-wrote and performed with the group Civil Wars, received the award for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
19. In March 2012, when the film debuted, it broke records for the highest single-day earnings (earning $67.3 million) and highest opening weekend revenue for a non-sequel ($152 million). Eventually, it ended up being the third highest earning movie of that year.
Initially, director Ross had plans to come back, but eventually decided not to continue with the series. Instead, Francis Lawrence took over and directed the subsequent three movies.
Ross clarified to Variety in March 2022 that the choice was quite challenging for him. What might not have been apparent is that he had two roles: writing and directing. Typically, you complete one task before moving on to the other. With only three-and-a-half months between projects, there simply wasn’t enough time to excel at both. As a result, he chose to move on. He was fortunate enough to work on Free State of Jones, a project that still ranks among his favorites, even though it wasn’t widely viewed. So, all in all, everything turned out well for him.
