Lizzo is scheduled to take a journey to the sky.
It’s been revealed that the individual aged 36 will reportedly be cast as the legendary rock and roll trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who is being portrayed in an upcoming biopic under production at Amazon MGM Studios.
As an over-the-moon fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about the upcoming project, Rosetta, where the phenomenal Lizzo lends her producing talents! This gripping tale will delve into the life of a legendary gospel singer, offering a unique perspective on her journey as a proudly queer Black woman. The narrative will follow her incredible transformation, turning an ordinary wedding ceremony into an unforgettable stadium concert—a testament to her indomitable spirit and extraordinary talent!
Lizzo expressed her excitement about a piece of news on social media, titling an Instagram post from March 24 as “Black Americans were instrumental in the creation of rock ‘n’ roll, yes they were!
Known as the “Mother of Rock and Roll,” Rosetta was one of the initial prominent gospel recording artists, recognized for her skills as an electric guitarist. She was among the early gospel musicians who successfully attracted rock, rhythm, and blues music enthusiasts.
Her unique music and guitar-playing technique significantly impacted several legendary rock ‘n’ roll artists, including Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Chuck Berry, and Bob Dylan.
In fact, it was the latter who called Rosetta “a powerful force of nature.”
As I reflected on Sister Rosetta Tharpe during my Theme Time Radio Hour segment, I couldn’t help but emphasize that she was far from ordinary or commonplace. According to Rolling Stone, she was a striking, divine figure, beyond comparison – sublime, splendid, and truly exceptional. She was not just a gifted musician, but also an evangelist who played the guitar and sang with a powerful spirit.
Gordon Stoker, a vocalist with The Jordanaires, discussed the significant impact that 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Elvis Presley had on his music while being part of the group, providing backup vocals for both Rosetta and eventually for Elvis.
In 2017, Gordon shared with Rolling Stone that Elvis had a deep admiration for Sister Rosetta. What captivated Elvis the most was her distinctive guitar playing technique. According to him, it was her unique picking style that held the greatest appeal: “That’s what really drew Elvis in – her pickin’. He appreciated her singing, but he was first enamored by that picking because it was so distinct.
One of the enduring tunes Rosetta sang was “Up Above My Head,” a song she recorded along with her fellow artist and lover, Marie Knight. According to historian Gayle Wald, their romantic involvement was widely known but not publicly acknowledged.
As a die-hard fanatic, I’m ecstatic to witness Lizzo embarking on a fresh journey! This exciting venture unfolds as the “Good as Hell” diva steps into a new phase of her life, having taken a brief hiatus from the limelight to tackle mental health hurdles.
Approximately one and a half years ago, she found herself in a profoundly dark depression, she shared during her first performance in nearly two years on March 12, as captured in videos circulated on social media. Overwhelmed by fear of people, she shunned interactions, preferring to remain unseen. However, she overcame that fear and decided to attend a concert, much like this one. As she navigated through the crowd towards her spot, an extraordinary event transpired.
She went on, “A stranger approached me and declared, ‘I admire you, Lizzo,'” she added. “They extended their hand, and I reciprocated, and we embraced. It was incredibly comforting.
Currently, there’s no confirmed release date for Rosetta yet. However, stay tuned as we share other exciting films coming out this year!
