It’s been confirmed that James Norton, known for his roles in Happy Valley and Playing Nice, is set to headline the cast of Wavewalker: Breaking Free, a film based on Suzanne Heywood’s top-selling memoir.
In addition, the series is being developed by Norton himself, under his production company Rabbit Track Pictures, with Jack Thorne – known for creating “Adolescence” and “Toxic Town” – handling the writing duties.
Wavewalker narrates an account of Heywood’s remarkable voyage that began at age seven, as her parents embarked on a global circumnavigation by sea aboard their sailboat, which ultimately spanned over ten years.
At Series Mania, as reported by Deadline, Norton announced personally that he will take on the remarkable role of Heywood’s father in the series.
I marveled at his words as he shared his vision: “Initially, this journey was envisioned as a dream, a mere sketch by this dashing patriarch, promising a sojourn of a year or two. Yet, it unfolded over a span of about a decade.
The father forced the two kids to work on his boat, effectively depriving them of their childhood and education.
The story revolves around a remarkable battle for survival and education, where a deeply affectionate father clashes with harshness towards his beloved daughters.
The tale centers on an inspiring struggle for life and education, pitting a charismatic yet stern father against the hardships he imposes upon his cherished daughters.

In a recent collaboration, I’ve joined forces with Norton and Thorne for their Netflix film Joy. Unlike our previous project, Adolescence, this new series will consist of four episodes. However, unlike the uninterrupted single-take style of Adolescence, these episodes won’t be shot in a single take.
In the upcoming BBC drama “King and Conqueror,” Norton is set to appear as Harold, Earl of Wessex, who will be acting opposite Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, known for his role in Game of Thrones, playing William, Duke of Normandy.
