It’s been a rough generation for Sony’s flagship first-party studio Naughty Dog.
Despite the ongoing success of its Survival Horror series The Last of Us, following the excellent live-action adaptation on HBO Max, there hasn’t been a fresh game release from them since 2020.
For those expecting Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet to release as early as 2026, there might be a bit of a wait: According to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier’s posts on ResetEra forum, it appears the game won’t be ready for launch in 2027 at the earliest.
It implies that there’ll be at least a seven-year gap between Naughty Dog games, which is significantly longer than during the PS3 era when the Uncharted trilogy and The Last of Us were all released within the same console generation. Keep in mind that game development has become more intricate since then, and the pandemic has also caused disruptions at the beginning of this current generation.
The Californian developer spent a significant amount of time working on a multiplayer spinoff for The Last of Us, an idea that seemed extremely ambitious. Ultimately, they decided to scrap the project because the resources required to sustain it would have hindered them from creating more single-player games in the future.
Despite everything being clear, it’s difficult to dismiss the sense that this generation might not fully realize its potential. We have high expectations for Intergalactic when it finally takes off, but if it’s still over two years away, it suggests we’ll likely receive just one new game from Naughty Dog for the PS5 from them.
