You Won’t Believe Who Created the Rebel Alliance Symbol in Star Wars

In the Star Wars universe, the Rebel Alliance uses a distinctive, crown-like emblem. This three-pronged insignia adorns rebel spaceships, helmets, clothing, and locations in the original trilogy, symbolizing hope against the tyranny of the Imperial rule. The history behind this Rebel Alliance symbol adds depth to what could have been a casual design choice, turning a simple logo into a battle cry echoing throughout the galaxy. The origins of the rebellion’s symbol are explored in the animated series, “Star Wars Rebels,” which premiered on October 3, 2014, with the two-part premiere titled “Spark of Rebellion.

Despite being released 37 years after “Star Wars: A New Hope”, the writers ingeniously linked the storyline of “Rebels” to the events of the original film, as the narrative of “Rebels” serves as a precursor to the Galactic Civil War.

Mandalorian Sabine Wren Was the Architect Behind the Symbol

In simple terms, the series Star Wars Rebels presents a group of rebels, based on the Outer Rim planet Lothal, who offer aid to refugees impacted by the Empire. The team includes the captain of the spaceship Ghost, Hera Syndulla, and her loyal droid Chopper; Kanan Jarrus, an ex-Jedi apprentice who survived Order 66; Lasat warrior Zeb Orrelios; Ezra Bridger, a Force-sensitive orphan from Lothal; and Sabine Wren, a Mandalorian artist with a troubled past.

Sabine’s armor showcases her unique creativity and artistic flair, distinguishing her from other Mandalorians who adhere strictly to traditional customs. In the heat of missions, Sabine often employs spray paint to create murals criticizing the Empire and marking sites of rebel victories with a distinctive phoenix motif. This phoenix design features pointed wings and head, forming five distinct, sharp edges. It’s evident that this symbol was the early concept for the emblem eventually adopted by the Rebel Alliance.

In Star Wars lore, Sabine Wren modifies her phoenix insignia by eliminating two of its original points, resulting in a distinctive three-pronged symbol that becomes iconic for the Rebel Alliance. The emotional impact of this symbol, born from Sabine’s creative expression, is particularly poignant when Mandalore’s tragic history is unveiled during Season 2 of The Mandalorian. Bo-Katan Kryze, a former leader of Mandalore, discloses that the Empire invaded Mandalore at the end of the Galactic Civil War and brutally massacred most of its inhabitants in an event known as The Night of a Thousand Tears. Among the casualties were Sabine’s family: her mother, father, and brother. In Star Wars: Ahsoka, Sabine laments not being present on Mandalore to fight alongside her family, as she was off training with Ahsoka at the time.

Considering the grim future that Mandalore faced under Imperial rule, it’s only fitting that a Mandalorian was the one to create the emblem of the Rebel Alliance. Although Sabine couldn’t physically battle the Imperial forces, her spirit and feelings were still present with her kin and fellow Mandalorians during their ultimate stand against the Empire.
