The iconic Mystery Machine vehicle is set to arrive on Netflix streaming service. They’ve officially given a series greenlight for the first live-action adaptation of Scooby-Doo, featuring an eight-episode origin tale about the detective team known as Mystery Inc., comprising Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and the lovable dog Scooby. Josh Appelbaum, writer from the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films, and Scott Rosenberg, writer of the Jumanji sequels, will take on the roles of showrunners, writers, and executive producers for Midnight Radio in this new series.
As a devoted cinemaphile, I can’t help but express my excitement for the upcoming live-action series that promises to reveal the thrilling tale of how our cherished mystery-solving gang and their loyal hound initially joined forces to solve the chilling case that kick-started it all.
Greg Berlanti, the brain behind the Arrowverse (a collection of DC TV shows on The CW), including Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Superman & Lois, will continue his role as executive producer through his production company, Berlanti Productions. This company has a long-term agreement with Warner Bros. Television.
One of my initial cherished roles in Hollywood was spending time with Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera as they autographed animation cells. Berlanti stated, speaking about a story skillfully created by Josh, Scott, and the entire Midnight Radio team, which beautifully embodies their unique personalities and ingenious creations. We appreciate them, along with Warners and Netflix, for their collaboration in making this version of Scooby-Doo a reality!
Peter Friedlander, Vice President of Scripted Series at Netflix, declared: “The Mystery Inc. gang is back in action! We’re thrilled to present Scooby-Doo as a live-action series for the very first time on television. The timeless franchise has left an indelible mark on pop culture – its enduring themes of friendship have resonated with fans across generations. In collaboration with Berlanti Productions and Midnight Radio, we’re dedicated to entertaining longtime enthusiasts while offering a fresh take on groovy adventures for a new generation of sleuthing kids.”
The plot synopsis reads: “In their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne find themselves enmeshed in a chilling mystery involving a solitary lost Great Dane puppy who might have witnessed a supernatural murder. Alongside the logical and methodical town resident, Velma, and the mysterious yet undeniably handsome newcomer, Freddy, they embark on a mission to unravel the case that is drawing each of them into a spooky nightmare, potentially revealing secrets hidden within their own lives.
1996 saw Time Warner, having purchased Hanna-Barbera – the creators of Scooby-Doo, unveil a live-action film adaptation of the beloved series titled Scooby-Doo in 2002. This production was penned by James Gunn and starred Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, Linda Cardellini as Velma, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, with Neil Fanning lending his voice to the computer-generated animated Scooby. The sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, continued the adventure in 2004, featuring the same talented cast.
Among the scripted series created by Berlanti are Netflix’s “You”, DCU-Max’s “Titans”, and The WB dramas such as “Dawson’s Creek” and “Everwood”. Berlanti Productions, co-managed with Sarah Schechter (of “All American”) and Leigh London Redman (of “Gotham Knights”), oversees these productions. Additionally, through Midnight Radio, André Nemec (of “From”) and Jeff Pinkner, known for their work on “Alias”, “Lost”, and “Fringe”, are also involved.
