Atomfall reviews and Metacritic scores are in: Here’s a roundup of what everyone’s saying about this new Game Pass survival game

2025 has been an incredible year for gaming so far, with highly anticipated titles like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, Assassin’s Creed Shadows gracing our screens, captivating gamers worldwide. Amidst this sea of big-name releases, a standout single-player indie game has caught my attention – Atomfall.

Transporting us back to the early 1960s in an alternate reality where the Windscale nuclear disaster of 1957 turned Great Britain’s Lakeland region into a radioactive wasteland, this game, available on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation (and Game Pass too!), tasks players with unraveling the mysteries hidden within the quarantined area. As we navigate through, we must battle against mutated wildlife, cult members, military soldiers, and advanced robots – all set against a backdrop of science fiction-inspired environments.

It’s shaping up to be quite an exhilarating journey!

A diverse array of scores can be found for Atomfall, with many reviews offering a positive assessment but others providing more neutral or unfavorable feedback as well. Overall, it appears that the game’s open-ended nature, exploration, world creation, visual appeal, and storytelling are often commended by critics, along with its technical aspects such as optimization and polish. Furthermore, the depiction of Lakeland in the game seems to be quite authentic and heavily influenced by British literature and symbolism, which is likely to resonate strongly with British players.

The fundamental battle and secret operations within Atomfall have received broad criticism, often due to a perceived lack of complexity and uniformity. Many critics assert that the game fails to effectively guide players, resulting in feelings of disorientation and perplexity about where to proceed and what actions to take. In essence, if you’re drawn to open-ended exploration and solving intriguing puzzles, Atomfall could offer an enjoyable experience. However, those seeking immersive combat or stealth gameplay might find themselves disappointed.

It’s worth mentioning that Atomfall for Windows Central was reviewed by my colleague Michael Hoglund. He awarded it a 4/5 star rating, praising it as an open-world survival game he thoroughly enjoyed throughout his playthrough and found more entertaining as he progressed. Michael pointed out that enthusiasts of Fallout, STALKER 2, and Prey would appreciate the similar pleasure derived from this game’s exceptional emphasis on player autonomy, which fosters curiosity and rewards exploration. Similar to other reviewers, Michael admired the exploration and investigation aspects but felt that the action could be improved and the NPC AI strengthened.

In the end, I believe I’ll hold off until a significant discount arrives for this game, given my strong affinity for Fallout and STALKER 2. However, as an eager enthusiast of Atomfall, I’m looking forward to playing it eventually. I might even reactivate my Xbox Game Pass subscription to jump in, but if you prefer not to do so and still want a discounted copy, don’t forget about the deal at CDKeys that drops the price from $49.99 to $38.69. Or, for a bit more, you can grab the Deluxe Edition at CDKeys for $51.99, which offers Early Access and some additional cosmetic items.
