Oshi no Ko Studio Is Making an Exciting New Villainess Anime

In 2023, the anime adaptation of Aka Akasaka’s well-known idol manga titled “Oshi no Ko” made its debut, with the second season following in the next year. The storyline of the manga ended dramatically and controversially in 2024, but the anime still has much to explore. As the third season of “Oshi no Ko” gears up for release in 2026, the studio responsible for this successful series, Doga Kobo, unveiled a palace drama revolving around a villainess character. The release date for the third season of “Oshi no Ko” has not been announced yet, but it is expected to adapt the Mainstay and Scandal Arcs from the manga.

The narrative will persist in showcasing Ruby Hoshino’s journey into the entertainment industry, specifically her involvement in a web variety show alongside Aqua. However, as the plot unfolds, Aqua uncovers hidden truths about his sister and the ongoing enigma surrounding their father. Notably, Doga Kobo studio, which brought us hits like “Oshi no Ko,” “Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-Kun,” “Plastic Memories,” and “Sing Yesterday With Me,” among others, is also the team behind the upcoming anime adaptation of “Though I Am an Inept Villainess.” This exciting project was officially announced this month, and here’s a rundown of its key details.

The Plot of Though I Am an Inept Villainess

The title of this light novel is “Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court,” which takes place in a royal setting reminiscent of ancient China. Within the Kingdom of Ei, there exists the Inner Court, where the prestigious Maiden Court flourishes. This is where the empress and her four imperial consorts are selected from the five most influential families. Reirin Kou is one of these candidates, a promising consort-in-training who aspires to become the empress. She is often referred to as the “gentle butterfly,” admired for her unparalleled grace and morality, but she struggles with poor health.

Another candidate, Keigetsu Shu, falls significantly short of her and is often filled with resentful jealousy. She is frequently viewed as a disreputable figure within the Maiden Court. After coming close to slaying Reirin, Keigetsu is incarcerated, awaiting her execution. However, what was unexpected was when the villainess employed magic to swap bodies and seize all that belonged to Reirin. The problem lies in the fact that Reirin’s delicate body makes it difficult for the villainess to adapt. The narrative primarily revolves around Keigetsu, who now leads a new existence as Reirin, navigating unforeseen obstacles.

Is There a Release Date?

Just recently, an announcement was made about the anime’s adaptation, but as of now, there’s no specific release date or even a timeframe given. A brief 35-second teaser showcases the character designs, but it doesn’t offer any insights regarding the anime’s premiere. Renowned director Mitsue Yamazaki, known for her works in series like “Attack on Titan,” “Bleach,” “Kids on the Slope,” “Zenshu,” and “Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-Kun,” among others, will helm this show. Unfortunately, we don’t have information about which streaming platforms will air it yet, but more details are expected to be revealed this year.
