Luigi Mangione nearly attended a hearing with some personalized contraband.
The defendant, aged 26 and charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December, was reportedly granted unique considerations to change into his personal attire for a court hearing on February 21st, supposedly to fulfill his clothing preferences, as stated in a document submitted to NBC News.
Yet, upon examining the bundle of attire presented by Mangione’s legal team, they soon found themselves focusing on an unopened package containing striped argyle socks, neatly wrapped in cardboard.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office stated in their filing, “Two personal heart-shaped notes were hidden inside the cardboard. One was addressed to someone called ‘Joan,’ while another was for Luigi with a message saying, ‘Be aware that there are countless individuals rooting for your success.’
Although he broke the dress code, Mangione was permitted to keep wearing the clothing items. However, he chose not to wear socks in court, instead opting for brown loafers and ankles adorned with shackles. The documentation stated that he discarded the socks because he thought they didn’t suit his appearance well.
TopMob News has reached out to Mangione’s legal team for comment but has not heard back.
In reaction to multiple demands from the defense, such as a request for a customized laptop for Mangione to examine evidence in the case, the Manhattan District Attorney submitted a filing. Nevertheless, every one of these demands was met with opposition from the prosecution.
In February, a former student of the University of Pennsylvania expressed gratitude to his supporters for the letters they sent him during his imprisonment at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. He is currently facing charges for murder and terrorism, as reported by NBC News, but has pleaded not guilty.
He expressed appreciation in a post on his site, which was set up by his legal team, saying he’s touched and appreciative of those who have shared their tales and shown support through letters. Although he may not be able to respond personally to most messages, he wants everyone to understand that he reads each one carefully. Once more, thank you to all who took the time to write.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase the passage as follows:
In my professional journey, I found myself at the helm of UnitedHealthcare, having joined this esteemed organization back in 2004. Over the years, I held various roles within the company before ascending to the position of CEO in 2021. Prior to UnitedHealthcare, I honed my skills at PwC, as per my LinkedIn profile. My academic journey culminated in 1997 when I graduated with distinction from the University of Iowa, majoring in business administration with a focus on accounting.
Steve Schmadeke, the school’s public relations manager, confirmed this information to NBC News. On a personal note, I was married to Paulette Thompson—though it appeared we were living separately as per TopMob News’ public records. We were blessed with two sons.
Tragically, my life was cut short in New York on December 4, 2024, at the age of 50.
6:46 AM on December 4, 2024, patrol officers from the Midtown North Precinct of the New York City Police Department were dispatched to a shooting incident outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny confirmed this during a press conference later that morning.
Kenny stated that the officers arrived at the scene two minutes later and discovered gunshot wounds on Thompson’s back and leg. According to Kenny, Emergency Medical Services transported Thompson several blocks to Mount Sinai West where the CEO was pronounced dead at 7:12 AM.
NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed during the press conference that the victim was in New York City for an investor conference. She speculated that the suspect had been hiding, waiting for several minutes, before shooting Thompson as he walked towards the conference hotel. The suspect allegedly approached from behind and fired multiple shots, striking Thompson at least once in the back and right calf. Several people reportedly passed the suspect, but he seemed to be biding his time until his target arrived.
Tisch characterized the shooting as a “premeditated, pre-planned, targeted attack” rather than a random act of violence. She emphasized that the NYPD is actively investigating the case and will not cease their efforts until they identify and apprehend the shooter.
As per Kenny’s account, the gunman on foot reached the New York Hilton Midtown before Thompson did, at around five minutes prior to Thompson’s arrival. In a video, it was observed that Thompson left his separate hotel alone at 6:44 a.m., apparently heading for a UnitedHealth Group investors conference scheduled for 8 a.m. that day. The shooter, disregarding other pedestrians, approached Thompson from behind, shot him, and continued to fire as he walked towards the victim.
After the shooting, the gunman fled on foot and later hopped onto an e-bike, disappearing into Central Park at Center Drive by 6:48 a.m. During the investigation, three live nine-millimeter rounds and three empty shell casings were found. Intriguingly, during a Dec. 6 press briefing, Kenny pointed out that the words “depose,” “delay,” and “deny” had been written on one of the shell casings with marker.
However, it’s important to note that the motive behind the killing remains unconfirmed at this point in time.
During the press conference on December 6, Kenny stated that investigators possess footage of the suspect arriving at Port Authority in New York City on November 24. He further explained that this bus is suspected to have originated in Atlanta with multiple stops along the route, so they’re unsure where exactly the suspect boarded the bus.
After the suspect arrived at Port Authority, Kenny detailed, the gunman hailed a cab and headed towards the vicinity of the Hilton hotel, where he stayed for approximately half an hour before moving to an Upper West Side hostel.
Kenny continued by sharing that on the morning of the shooting, the gunman departed from the hostel at 5:30 a.m., arrived at the Hilton hotel at 5:41 a.m., and spent time in the area before going to a nearby Starbucks where he purchased bottled water and a snack. He then returned to the hotel, and the shooting took place at 6:44 a.m.
Immediately after the shooting, the gunman fled the scene. Kenny explained that the suspect was seen entering Central Park at 60th St. and Center Drive at 6:48 a.m., exiting through W. 77th St. and Central Park West at 6:56 a.m. The gunman was spotted on W. 86th St without the bike at 7:00 a.m., and four minutes later, Kenny added, the suspect got in a cab at 86th St. and Amsterdam Avenue. The chief detective further stated that the gunman was seen near the George Washington Bridge at 7:30 a.m.
Kenny informed CNN on December 6 that investigators initially believed the shooter had left New York City after he was spotted at Port Authority.
During a press briefing on December 4, Kenny stated that the suspect seemed to be a man with lighter skin who wore a light-colored jacket, possibly brown or cream, a black face mask, sneakers with black and white stripes, and a noticeably gray backpack.
Over the following days, the NYPD released several photos of the person they were searching for, but many images had the suspect’s face obscured due to the mask.
On December 5, a senior law enforcement official informed NBC News that photos without a mask were obtained from surveillance footage at an Upper West Side hostel. Moreover, two separate officials noted that investigators were examining whether the individual used a false ID and cash for reserving a room at the hostel.
Regarding why the suspect lowered his face mask, Kenny explained during the December 6 briefing that there was an interaction while he was checking in, which involved casual conversation. At some point, he pulled down his mask and smiled at the clerk.
Kenny also mentioned that a cellphone was discovered in the alley where the suspect escaped before reaching the ebike, but it’s uncertain if the phone belonged to the shooter. Two law enforcement sources reported to NBC News that a backpack was also found in Central Park.
Investigators are examining all potential leads, such as Thompson’s social media and interviews with staff members and family, to advance the case. They are also collaborating with law enforcement agencies in Minnesota and Atlanta.
On December 9, Luigi Mangione was apprehended by the Altoona Police Department on firearm-related charges. According to a criminal record obtained by NBC News, these charges include two felonies – one for forgery and one for carrying a firearm without a license, as well as three misdemeanors: tampering with records or identification, possessing tools used in crime, and providing false identity information to law enforcement.
NYPD Commissioner Tisch stated that a McDonald’s employee identified Mangione, prompting the Altoona police to be contacted. When asked about his recent visit to New York, Mangione reportedly grew quiet and started shaking, as reported by NBC News.
Tisch also referred to Mangione as a “person of interest” in Thompson’s murder and discussed the ongoing efforts to locate him, expressing gratitude towards law enforcement partners and the public. She explained that for more than five days, NYPD investigators meticulously sifted through countless hours of video footage, followed up on numerous tips, and analyzed all forms of forensic evidence – DNA, fingerprints, IP addresses, and much more – to tighten the investigation’s focus. They employed drones, canine units, and scuba divers. They utilized the domain awareness system, Argus cameras, and conducted aerial surveys, while their detectives also went door-to-door interviewing potential witnesses and performing traditional police work that they are renowned for. This blend of traditional detective work and modern technology ultimately led to this arrest today.
Besides acting suspiciously, Tisch pointed out, Mangione was found to be in possession of several fake IDs, including a U.S. passport. Furthermore, during the investigation, officers discovered a firearm and a suppressor on him, both fitting the description of the weapon used in the murder. They also found clothing items such as a mask, similar to those worn by our suspect, and a fraudulent New Jersey ID that matched the one used by him at the New York hostel before the shooting. Moreover, officers recovered a hand-written note indicating his motive and state of mind.
On December 9th, Manhattan authorities accused Mangione of murder, based on documents obtained by NBC News. He is additionally charged with three weapons offenses: two counts for possessing loaded firearms (second-degree) and one count for a silencer (third-degree offense). Additionally, he faces a charge for having a fake document. As of now, he hasn’t pleaded guilty to any charges.
Based on NBC News reports citing the NYPD, Mangione was found with three short writings totalling less than 300 words when he was arrested. Some senior law enforcement sources informed the network that these writings contained statements like “Frankly these parasites had it coming”.
The writings suggested that Mangione acted alone, though officials have not yet ruled out the possibility of other individuals being involved. In his writings, Mangione stated that he was not working with anyone and expressed regret for any trouble caused.
In an interview on Today, Tisch mentioned that while the writings showed anti-corporatist sentiments and issues with healthcare, the specific motive behind Mangione’s actions has yet to be confirmed as the investigation continues over the coming weeks and months.
On December 10th, Mangione appeared at a court hearing held at the Blair County Courthouse in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. Upon his arrival, NBC News reported that he expressed to families present, “It’s completely detached and an affront to the intelligence of the American people.”
According to the news outlet, Mangione declined extradition to New York and was denied bail, meaning he will continue to be held in SCI Huntingdon prison in Pennsylvania. His attorney, Thomas Dickey, communicated with reporters that Mangione plans to plead not guilty both in Pennsylvania and New York.
Dickey stated, “I haven’t found any evidence implicating him as the shooter,” adding, “Remember, this is crucial: A core principle of American justice is the presumption of innocence, and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, that remains in effect.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but share some intriguing details about a figure who’s stirred quite a buzz lately – Luigi Mangione. This man, whom I once revered, is now entangled in the tragic murder of Brian Thompson and grappling with multiple charges, not just in Pennsylvania, but also in New York. The allegations span from forgery to illegal weapon possession.
An impressive academic background adorns his profile – an Ivy League graduate, to be precise. He bagged a Bachelor of Science in engineering in 2020 and later, a Master’s degree in the same field at the University of Pennsylvania. The school confirmed this information to NBC News.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Kenny has shed light on Mangione’s upbringing, disclosing that he was born and raised in Maryland. His latest address is listed as Honolulu, but he also maintains connections to San Francisco, according to Kenny’s statement to NBC News.
Following his arrest, Mangione’s family released a heartfelt statement on X, expressing their shock and devastation. They asked for prayers for all parties involved in this heart-wrenching ordeal. In their December 9 post, they stated, “Unfortunately, we cannot comment on news reports regarding Luigi Mangione. We only know what we have read in the media. Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest. We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and ask people to pray for all involved. We are devastated by this news.
After hearing the news about the shooting, Thompson’s family expressed deep sorrow for his untimely demise. As reported by NBC affiliate KARE in Minneapolis on Dec. 5, the family statement read: “We are devastated to learn about the senseless loss of our cherished Brian. Brian was a remarkable man, overflowing with love, generosity, and talent. He lived his life fully and touched countless lives. Above all, he was an amazing father to our two sons and will be deeply missed. We welcome your sympathies and kindly ask for privacy during this challenging period as we grieve.”
In addition, Thompson’s wife, Paulette, disclosed that her husband had received threats prior to his death. In an interview with NBC News on Dec. 5, she stated: “Yes, there were some threats against him. To be honest, I’m not certain about the details. All I know is that he mentioned there were individuals who had been threatening him.
UnitedHealth Group, which is the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, expressed deep sorrow and shock following the death of their dear associate, Thompson. In a show of respect, their corporate headquarters in Minnesota lowered their flags to half-mast.
In a statement released on December 4th, the organization shared that Brian was greatly admired by everyone who knew him. They are collaborating with the New York Police Department and ask for understanding as they navigate this tough time. Their sympathies go out to Brian’s family and those who were close to him.
In a statement released on December 5th, the company acknowledged their grief but also appreciated the overwhelming kindness and support that poured in following this tragic event.
Numerous patients, consumers, healthcare professionals, associations, government officials, and other caring individuals reached out to express their condolences. The company is grateful for this compassion, even as they grieve. Their primary focus at this time is supporting Brian’s family during their mourning period, ensuring the safety of their employees, and working with law enforcement to apprehend the perpetrator.
As a company that provides healthcare services, they will remain committed to being there for those who depend on them. They ask for everyone to respect the privacy of the family as they cope with their loss.
