In Jonathan Hickman’s “New Avengers” series, everything – as we know it in the Marvel Universe – started moving towards its inevitable end. While “New Avengers” dealt with themes of death, his subsequent “Avengers” series focused on life. To borrow words from Thanos, it was a perfect balance. Over 33 issues, “New Avengers” traced the actions of the Illuminati, a secret council consisting of Reed Richards, Black Panther, Namor, and Doctor Strange. On the other hand, Hickman’s 44-issue “Avengers” volume centered around two characters: Steve Rogers, representing life, and Tony Stark, symbolizing death. In the end, one always prevails.
Hickman’s two “Avengers” series, namely “Avengers” issues 35-44 and “New Avengers” issues 24-33, were linked in a story arc titled “Time Runs Out”. This narrative led up to the 2015 event known as “Secret Wars”, marking both the conclusion and reboot of the Marvel Universe.
With Marvel Studios officially revealing the complete cast for “Avengers: Doomsday“, a blend of characters hailing from both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Fox “X-Men” films, let’s dive into all you need to know about “Secret Wars”, the 2015 comic book crossover that serves as the blueprint for this multiverse-encompassing tale, as detailed below.

Time Runs Out
When the Illuminati learned that multiple universes were merging dangerously in a series of events threatening the fabric of reality, Earth’s most powerful champions joined forces, only to later disband due to disagreements on how to preserve their world. Initially, the Illuminati reconstructed the Infinity Gauntlet and harnessed its power from the six Infinity Stones to halt an incursion, but in doing so, they severely damaged the gems. Later, they took an extreme action: deploying antimatter bombs to obliterate other planets in order to ensure their own survival.
In a sequence of events, two entire universes, including our own Earth, have been colliding forcefully at a specific intersection. The possible outcomes are either the complete annihilation of both Earths, or the sacrifice of one Earth to preserve both universes.
A faction that arose with the intention of averting the end times was known as the Cabal, essentially serving as adversaries to the Illuminati. This group included characters like Thanos, Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, Terrax, a survivor from the incursions called the Black Swan, the unstable Inhuman Maximus, and Namor, who aligned with the Cabal in their mission to destroy Earths to save entire universes.
Or simply:
The Cabal, an opposing faction to the Illuminati, was a group that formed with the purpose of averting apocalypse. They consisted of characters such as Thanos, Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, Terrax (an incursion survivor known as the Black Swan), Maximus (an unstable Inhuman), and Namor, who joined to destroy Earths in order to save universes.
With the brilliant minds of the Illuminati, such as Beast from X-Men, Amadeus Cho, and a combined Hulk/Doc Green, striving to avert the impending doom, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Avengers team (Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson/Captain America, Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Clint Barton/Hawkeye, and Sue Richards/the Invisible Woman) came together. At the same time, the Multiversal Avengers were formed, consisting of Hyperion from the Eternals, Starbrand, Nightmask, Abyss, the cosmic Gardener Ex Nihilo, and Odinson, who was no longer deemed worthy to wield Mjolnir.
With the number of universes steadily decreasing, only two remained – Earth-616, also known as the primary Marvel Universe, and Earth-1610, the Ultimate Universe. These two realities were on a head-on trajectory, approaching each other in what was known as the final incursion.
Originally, there existed an uncountable multitude of realities. However, following today’s events, these have been drastically narrowed down to just two: this one and the one we originated from. You might be wondering what awaits us on that world. The answer is truly terrifying: extraordinary heroes reside there – the brave, the fearless, and the valiant. If you wish for your world to survive, it is crucial that we devise a plan to eliminate them all.
In the grand cosmos, known as the Ultimate Universe, Reed Richards, also called the Maker, started obliterating planets and teamed up with Thanos’ destructive Cabal on Earth-1610. Simultaneously, on Earth-616, Reed’s Future Foundation commenced constructing a lifeboat, an advanced craft designed to endure destruction, allowing survivors from their universe to rebuild humanity. Time eventually caught up, and…
Everything Dies
In the epic clash between Earth-616 and Earth-1610, the outcome hanging in the balance for both planets, the final issue of 2015’s Avengers, specifically #44, concluded in a circular fashion, returning to Steve Rogers and Tony Stark. “One was life, one was death. One is always victorious. Everything eventually perishes.
In the meantime, Doctor Strange – now the Sorcerer Supreme – took on the role of the Great Eye for the Black Priests in an effort to save a multiverse on the brink. He then crossed paths with the Black Swans, followers of their leader, Rabum Alal, who was ultimately revealed to be none other than Victor von Doom.
In various realities, the villainous Doctor Doom has been moving from one universe to another, eliminating beings known as Molecule Men – specifically, Owen Reece, an entity consistently present across all universes. These Molecule Men were originally crafted by the Ivory Kings with a hidden destructive purpose: to explode and bring about the end of entire universes when triggered.
In the vast expanse of the multiverse, each entity finds themselves in diverse conditions. Maybe in one dimension, you were a versatile poet, in another a humble beggar, and yet another an honorable man. Interestingly, there are fewer instances of you than expected – a consequence of a massive purge called Dooms. Yet, the rare entities that survive share a distinct individuality.
In the midst of the cosmic demise, I unearthed a staggering revelation: the Beyonders, creators of an endless array of Molecule Men woven into the very tapestry of the multiverse as their self-destruct mechanism, were none other than the enigmatic Ivory Kings orchestrating the incursions.
In this scenario, Doom launched an assault against the all-powerful beings known as the Beyonders. He employed the Molecule Man for his intended purpose: a destructive device capable of annihilating a universe. As a result, Doom managed to vanquish the Beyonders, seize their power, and transfer it into Molecule Man to serve as a conduit. With the remnants of various worlds remaining intact, he planned to preserve them while crafting a new universe to replace the dying one.
“Would it be worth it if we could avoid our certain Doom? If we could save… something?”
— Doom
Following Steve and Tony’s demise in “Avengers” #44, 2015’s “Secret Wars” #1 marked a tragic end to all existence. As Earth-1610 clashed with Earth-616, the Future Foundation’s lifeboat was deployed to save a select group of survivors, while simultaneously, the Maker and the Cabal managed their own escape via a lifeboat.
During the fight, Manifold utilized his teleportation abilities to transfer Spider-Man, Star-Lord, Captain Marvel, Cyclops, and Jane Foster Thor onto the lifeboat. However, when the lifeboat’s launching mechanism was obliterated, Mr. Fantastic, Reed Richards, tragically witnessed the demise of the rest of his family, the Fantastic Four. The ultimate incursion culminated with both realities colliding and being wiped out.
Doom Messiah
At the end of everything, there was only Doom.
After the annihilation of the multiverse, it became clear that Doctor Doom had harnessed the might of the Beyonders to construct Battleworld: a world pieced together from remnants of those universes obliterated during the incursions. This realm was ruled by none other than the God Emperor Doom.
In this fictional universe, Emperor Doom maintained his dominion over Battleworld from Castle Doom in the city of Doomstadt, where the cosmic being Galactus stood watch. From his seat on the World Tree called Yggdrasil, Doom governed with his queen, Susan Storm, and their child Valeria von Doom, who led the Foundation. As the brainpower behind Doom, the Foundation was composed of brilliant minds such as Val’s brother Franklin von Doom, Alex Power, Dragon Man, Bentley 23, Nostradamus, Night Machine, and Psycho Man.
Doom’s enforcers were led by Stephen Strange, Sheriff of Agamotto, and the Thor Corps — a police force comprised entirely of Thors, including Thor Odinson, Storm (the Goddess of Thunder), and Beta Ray Bill, wielding the Stormbreaker.
Eventually, the wicked group known as the Cabal stepped onto dry land from their life raft, having survived the destruction of Earth-1610. This revelation brought to light even more survivors of the last incursion, including Thanos, Reed Richards (also called the Maker), Yabbat Ummon Tarru (known as Black Swan), Terrax, Maximus, Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, and Namor.

Doomsday
1. The individuals rescued from the life-craft had been in a state of suspended animation for eight years. Stranger informed these out-of-sync Avengers about how Doom, the God Emperor, built Battleworld using fragments from the collision points of disappearing worlds – a fact that none of Battleworld’s inhabitants recall the worlds prior to theirs. “I gazed upon the void of omnipotence and fled,” Stranger confessed. “Doom did not. Then he rescued everything that was left to save.”
2. The occupants of the life-craft had been in a long hibernation for eight years. Strange briefed these time-displaced Avengers on how Doom, the God Emperor, created Battleworld from leftovers of the collision points between vanishing worlds – something that none of Battleworld’s residents could recall their previous worlds. “I glanced into the abyss of omnipotence and chose to retreat,” Strange acknowledged. “Doom did not. Then he preserved all that was left worth saving.”
3. The life-raft occupants had been in a prolonged stasis for eight years. Stranger explained this to the displaced Avengers, who were out of sync with time, about how Doom, the God Emperor, fashioned Battleworld from debris of the collision points between vanishing worlds – something that none of Battleworld’s inhabitants could recall their original worlds. “I peered into the abyss of omnipotence and decided to escape,” Strange admitted. “Doom did not. Then he protected everything worth saving.”
4. The life-pod occupants were in a deep sleep for eight years, which Stranger shared with the time-altered Avengers. They learned that Doom, the God Emperor, assembled Battleworld from fragments of the collision points between vanishing worlds – something none of Battleworld’s residents could remember their original realms. “I stared into the abyss of omnipotence and chose to withdraw,” Strange confessed. “Doom did not. Then he guarded everything worth preserving.”
5. The life-capsule inhabitants were in a state of hibernation for eight years, as told by Stranger to the out-of-sequence Avengers. They discovered that Doom, the God Emperor, formed Battleworld from remnants of the collision points between disappearing worlds – something none of Battleworld’s denizens could recollect their past worlds. “I glimpsed into the abyss of omnipotence and decided to retreat,” Strange admitted. “Doom did not. Then he safeguarded all that was left to save.”
In the aftermath of the ultimate invasion, the victors – both the brave protagonists and the Cabal – eventually faced Emperor Doom, who commanded his new subjects to worship their deity. However, Doom brutally executed a rebellious Cyclops, and just before meeting his end, Strange dispersed the heroes across Battleworld to prevent Doom from annihilating them all.
The arrival of these foreign entities ignited rebellion in numerous realms scattered throughout the Battleworld, a world comprising various combinations such as remnants of Manhattan from Earth-616 and Earth-1610, K’un Lun, Spider-Island, the Domain of Apocalypse, the Deadlands, and the Wastelands. Simultaneously, the Reed Richards from Earth-616 and the Reed/Maker from Earth-1610 collaborated to tackle what appeared to be an intractable issue: Finding a way to eliminate a deity.
“My name is Reed Richards… and I’m the one who fixes things.”
— Reed Richards
In Castle Doom, two versions of Spider-Man uncovered that the Molecule Man was behind Doom’s power supply, while Black Panther and Namor went back to Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum and unearthed a weapon capable of killing gods: the Infinity Gauntlet. Meanwhile, Thanos, who believed no mortal should possess the ability to alter reality, started to sabotage Doom’s rule by stirring up his adversaries elsewhere.
Reed, along with his comrades from the Maker, joined forces with Star-Lord in an operation aimed at defeating Doom. Meanwhile, the Thors, backed by Maestro’s Hulk and his army of Worldbreakers, led an assault on Castle Doom, where a colossal version of The Thing served as its protective shield.
1. In a fierce battle, The Thing clashed with Galactus. Star-Lord transformed Yggdrasill into a colossal Groot, and God Emperor Doom violently severed Thanos’ spinal column when the Mad Titan mobilized an Annihilation Horde against what was believed to be a mortal. Later, Namor and Black Panther, equipped with the Infinity Gauntlet, embarked on a mission to bring an end to Doom’s rule.
2. The Thing engaged Galactus in combat; Star-Lord made Yggdrasill grow into a massive Groot, while God Emperor Doom brutally removed Thanos’ spine after the Mad Titan assembled an Annihilation Horde against someone thought to be human. Subsequently, Namor and Black Panther, armed with the Infinity Gauntlet, sought to overthrow Doom’s rule.
3. The Thing fought Galactus; transforming Yggdrasill into a giant Groot was what Star-Lord did, while God Emperor Doom mercilessly extracted Thanos’ spinal cord following the Mad Titan’s attempt to annihilate someone believed to be mortal. Later, Namor and Black Panther, using the Infinity Gauntlet, aimed to dethrone Doom.
4. The Thing battled with Galactus; Star-Lord enlarged Yggdrasill into a colossal Groot, and God Emperor Doom ripped out Thanos’ spine when the Mad Titan waged war against what was perceived as a mortal. Afterward, Namor and Black Panther, armed with the Infinity Gauntlet, pursued ending Doom’s reign.
5. The Thing faced off against Galactus in combat; Star-Lord converted Yggdrasill into an enormous Groot, and God Emperor Doom disemboweled Thanos by ripping out his spinal cord after the Mad Titan attacked someone who was assumed to be mortal. Later, Namor and Black Panther, wielding the Infinity Gauntlet, set out to depose Doom.
6. The Thing went toe-to-toe with Galactus in a fierce battle; Star-Lord turned Yggdrasill into an immense Groot, while God Emperor Doom savagely yanked out Thanos’ spinal column after the Mad Titan launched an attack on what was considered a mortal. Then, Namor and Black Panther, equipped with the Infinity Gauntlet, vowed to bring down Doom’s rule.
