2025 promises significant developments for Superman, with the main series gaining momentum at an accelerated pace following Superman #24. Over the previous months, Superman has faced numerous challenges such as House of Brainiac, Doomsday’s resurrection, and Lois Lane’s transformation into Superwoman. However, two shocking revelations in Superman #24 have drastically altered the course of events, and Lex Luthor is involved – though not as you might anticipate. If you haven’t read Superman #24 yet, beware of impending spoilers!
The story unfolds with Mercy and Lena demonstrating their recent projects at SuperCorp to Superman. What stands out most is their efforts to mimic and innovate based on Superman’s battles from the past few months. They have been developing intelligent drones and exoskeletons that focus on offensive capabilities instead of just defensive operations, and Mercy aims to commercialize these inventions.
Superman initially expresses reservations regarding the concept, yet they present him with additional demonstrations of their inventions, such as tech that enables individuals to remain in suspended animation during transportation to a hospital. This technology incorporates certain features reminiscent of the Phantom Zone, but it serves a noble purpose. However, things are not always as they first appear.
In this scenario, Superwoman joins the Justice League on a mission, and as they engage in combat, they discover a weapon bearing the SuperCorp emblem being wielded by the Khunds. She presents it to Superman and Lena, leading them to confront Mercy in her lab. Mercy explains that it’s called the Super-Gun, revealing she was unaware it was under field testing, with plans to sell it earlier than anticipated. Superman dismisses her on the spot, but things quickly take an unexpected turn.
In response to a burst of Kryptonite, Mercy assertively states, “You can’t dismiss me,” as it becomes clear that she had secretly retrieved both the hard drive and heart of Metallo – previously dismantled by Brainiac while building his Queen. This unexpected blast from the device leaves Superman and Superwoman sprawled on the floor.
Lena asks Mercy about her current actions, and Mercy explains that this was always part of the plan for SuperCorp. “Lex wanted to change Superman, mold him into what he desired. Then use Superman to expand his own domain,” Mercy explained. Lena remarks that was an old Lex, to which Mercy responds, “Your father was correct. The world needs Superman. And I believe the world still requires a Lex Luthor. The one they arrested…he wasn’t up to the task…so I made a new one.
In that moment, Mercy uncovers a Lex Luthor disguised in Superman’s dark attire, and his eyes emit a fiery red glow. This incarnation of Lex appears to be unfettered by any of the doubts or reservations that the new Lex exhibits, making him one of the most lethal forces on Earth. Not only does it seem that SuperCorp is not what we initially perceived, but now there are two Lex Luthors in existence, and one appears to lack any moral compass at all. To state that Superman’s world has been dramatically flipped would be an understatement; we can hardly wait for Superman #25 to arrive.
