The firm responsible for re-launching classic retro games such as “Rendering Ranger: R2”, known as Ziggurat, has unveiled a fresh assortment of ten timeless Commodore 64 titles. This new collection is set to hit the market in May and will feature digital comics crafted by Ant Williams and Andy Lanning, notable comic book artists who have previously worked with giants like Marvel and DC.
The focus here is a game collection titled “Cosmi: Forbidden Forests,” named after one of the Commodore 64 games within it, as well as the developer who produced them. All the games included were published by Cosmi, a prominent game publisher during the era of computer gaming on platforms like the Commodore 64, Atari Home Computer Systems, Apple II, and Amiga. Now, Ziggurat holds the rights to these Cosmi games and is bringing together many of their most celebrated titles in one convenient location for release.
The following ten games are confirmed to be part of Cosmi: Forbidden Forests at release:
- Forbidden Forest
- Beyond the Forbidden Forest
- Aztec Challenge
- Caverns of Khafka
- Seal
- Delta Man
- Chomp!
- Chernobyl: Nuclear Power Plant Simulation
- Spite & Malice
- Navcom 6: The Persian Gulf Defense
In the vein of modern retro re-releases, players will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the authentic versions of these games, while also utilizing convenient save states and rewind functions for assistance during gameplay. Notably, Cosmi: Forbidden Forests will showcase a collection of advertisements and manuals that were used to market these games initially. However, the development doesn’t end there; additional features are still being added to this compilation.
As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that Ziggurat has crafted an updated rendition of the captivating game, Forbidden Forest. This new version offers players a distinctive art style option, reminiscent of 14th-century tapestries, adding a unique charm to the gaming world. The audio has also been given a fresh modern twist. To put it in perspective, this aesthetic is unlike anything commonly found in video games; the closest parallel I can draw is Pentiment, but even that bears little resemblance to the revamped Forbidden Forest.
Alongside the Cosmi: Forbidden Forests game, you’ll find digital comics crafted by Ideas & Inks. This is a company founded by Ant Williams, an acclaimed comic book artist who has contributed to DC’s Batman: Two Faces and The Superman Monster, and Andy Lanning, a prolific writer whose work includes comic books centered around The Legion of Super Heroes, Resurrection Man, Nova, and The Authority. They have collaborated with Zigguart in the past to produce comics based on Slave Zero X.
Platforms such as the NES and Sega Genesis often receive more attention when it comes to remakes of classic games, making it interesting to find a collection that focuses solely on Commodore 64 games. This will be an excellent way to access all these Cosmi-published titles once it becomes available.
Cosmi: Forbidden Forests launches for PC, PS5, and Nintendo Switch on May 27.
