Discover Why Atomfall is Available on Xbox Game Pass and Legacy Consoles!

In a chat session, Gaming Editor Rob Leane from TopMob interviewed Jason Kingsley, one of the founders of Rebellion Developments, delving into various aspects of Atomfall. They discussed reasons behind its inclusion in Xbox Game Pass and its compatibility with previous console generations, while also hinting at potential plans for a port to the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

You could catch the interview right above here, or find it on the TopMob Gaming YouTube Channel. If you prefer reading, we’ve also compiled some interesting excerpts from Kingsley that are provided below.

In simpler terms, Alex Raisbeck, one of TopMob’s gaming writers, had an enjoyable experience with Atomfall, as detailed in his review. Although it’s great that the game is now accessible during the ninth console generation, we were slightly taken aback to find out that Atomfall has been released on Xbox One and PS4 platforms.

If, like us, you want to know why, then you’ve come to the right place!

Why is Atomfall on Xbox Game Pass?

For Kingsley, Xbox Game Pass serves as a tool to put the game into the hands of numerous players, thereby allowing Atomfall’s influence to spread naturally.

Game Pass seems to help games gain more visibility and spread their popularity among many players.

It’s a trick that’s worked for Rebellion Developments’ latest title too.

We’ve been doing exceptionally well with Sniper Elite: Resistance lately. This success, however, might encourage individuals to play a game they initially were hesitant about due to its purchase price.

Many players not typically drawn to games like Atomfall are being attracted to it, as Kingsley elaborates.

Initially, you might say, “I think I’ll give it a try, but I’m not usually into action-adventure exploring games.” However, after playing for a while, you find yourself saying, “Surprisingly, I actually enjoy this game.” In essence, it’s easy to get started with, there’s no real hurdle or prerequisite needed.

1. Option A: Furthermore, it disseminates information. Interestingly enough, similar services such as Game Pass and PlayStation’s counterpart are instrumental in promoting games.

2. Option B (Informal): In other words, it helps get the message out there. It turns out that platforms like Game Pass and its Sony counterpart play a big role in spreading the news about games.

3. Option C (Conversational): To put it simply, this helps spread the word. What we discovered is that services such as Game Pass and its equivalent from Sony are quite effective at sharing information about games.

Essentially, this allows players to perform much of the promotional work that a costly marketing team would handle. As Kingsley explains, “The game is more likely to attract attention due to increased play, as more individuals engage with it.

In my opinion, given our status as an independent studio, we lack the massive advertising budgets common in the industry. However, positive word-of-mouth from players carries significant value for us.

This word of mouth can then translate into sales, not just people trying it on Game Pass.

When someone suggests a game to their friend, saying, ‘This game is worth playing because I got it through Game Pass,’ and the friend responds that they don’t have Game Pass, the recommendation carries significant weight, prompting them to consider purchasing it.

To put it simply, I’m all about sharing the gaming fun with as many folks as possible, however they prefer to enjoy it. That’s why Rebellion Developments has been eagerly collaborating with Microsoft to make that happen!

Why is Atomfall on PS4 and Xbox One?

As a dedicated gamer still rocking an eighth-generation console (excluding the agile Nintendo Switch), I’m thrilled to know that Atomfall isn’t exclusive to the glory of current-gen consoles. Instead, it invites us all to join the excitement!

It’s crucial for those players to honor Kingsley’s viewpoint since he strongly advocates for continuing to utilize the older, traditional gaming platforms because they continue to maintain substantial player communities.

This approach carries some risks, as Kingsley notes, since it introduces complexity. Essentially, you’re dealing with multiple variations (5 or 6 skews), diverse platforms that need attention, and increased quality checks – all of which can multiply your workload by five or six times.

As a die-hard gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Atomfall has been officially verified for Steam Deck! Given my initial impression of its compatibility with the portable PC, this validation just makes the anticipation even more exhilarating. It feels fantastic knowing that Atomfall will run smoothly on my Steam Deck, making my gaming experience on-the-go nothing short of seamless and enjoyable!

Kingsley points out that “it’s likely that in the not-so-distant future, many individuals will transition to the latest platforms.

What about upcoming platforms like Switch 2?

In this context, Kingsley tends to be somewhat secretive, and shares that they often become aware of new hardware ahead of the wider public, typically. This is because they need to develop games.

Rather than speaking about the Switch 2 specifically, Kingsley uses the analogy of when Rebellion Developments were developing Battlezone, a modern revival of the ’80s hit, originally launched on PlayStation VR in 2016, as an illustrative example.

“We received the headsets unexpectedly early. Therefore, it’s crucial that we exercise extreme caution. We must keep them a secret from everyone. Denying any involvement is necessary. In fact, we can’t admit we can’t discuss them. We simply can’t.

Kingsley goes on to say, “We fundamentally operate as a tech-centric, innovative tech firm. Therefore, any new technology grabs our attention, yet it also presents us with difficulties due to its novelty in terms of hardware.

From what can be inferred, it’s highly probable that Rebellion Developments has acquired a Nintendo Switch 2 development kit. However, as Kingsley notes, such agreements often prohibit companies from publicly discussing such matters.

We won’t have very long to wait, though, as the Switch 2 Direct is nigh upon us!
