According to Stephen Graham, there are plans for a second season of Netflix’s popular teen drama series, Adolescence.
In its initial fortnight on air, this show has garnered massive audience interest and critical acclaim. It portrays the aftermath when a 13-year-old child stands charged for the murder of a schoolmate.
Penned by Graham and Jack Thorne, this gripping narrative tackles contemporary issues involving harmful online elements significantly impacting young males, drawing a connection to the ongoing issue of violence against women and girls.
During a conversation with Variety, Graham and his producing partner, Hannah Walters (who are a couple off-screen), talked about the show’s possible continuation now that more people are watching it on Netflix.
Actor Graham, from A Thousand Blows, casually hinted at the series’ remarkable achievements by saying, “Let’s take a look at the numbers.” Later, he mentioned the potential for crafting another tale.
Walters expressed that creating a suitable sequel to Adolescence might prove challenging, given its significant influence, yet she remains eager to carry on collaborating with Netflix.
However, there was one option that she decisively ruled out.
She asserted, “A prequel to ‘Adolescence’ is unlikely, but the potential for exploration in a standalone piece and the value in examining humanity once more are immense.
Walters commented, “Indeed, things seem to be going well for the show.” He went on to say, “Everyone appears satisfied, if I may put it that way.
The film “Adolescence” is helmed by director Philip Barantini, who has collaborated with Graham in the past, particularly on the intense, single-take narrative set within the high-pressure atmosphere of a bustling restaurant kitchen titled “Boiling Point”.
In addition to the main characters in Adolescence, there are other notable performances by Ashley Walters portraying DI Luke Bascombe, Faye Marsay playing DS Misha Frank, Christine Tremarco as Manda Miller, and debutant Owen Cooper taking on the role of Jamie, who is accused.
