If “Atomfall” signifies anything, it’s a compelling example demonstrating the benefits of adopting the “Fallout” style of game design in various contexts beyond its usual American formula. Rebellion has successfully ventured into this territory by creating a unique survival game infused with British charm and challenging gameplay that strikes a balance between familiarity and independent identity.
In the novel “Atomfall,” there’s a substantial amount of evidence that supports my viewpoint. So, let’s dive right into the main points we’re exploring.
The story commences with a catastrophic incident, one that could signal the end of the world, such as a nuclear accident at Windscale in Northern England. Afterwards, there’s a leap forward through time, showing all the aftermath. Five years later, the region has been sealed off into a containment zone, leaving those trapped within to face their destiny without hope of escape.
In the novel “Atomfall“, the main character is disoriented and afflicted by amnesia. The narrative’s core revolves around discovering their past and uncovering the truth about the current state of this once connected world, which has now become secluded.
The majority of the narrative unfolds within a confined quarantine area, where numerous dangers and questionable characters who are not friendly towards outsiders reside. Atomfall heavily depends on the intrigue generated by these elements, with much of the plot development hinging on uncovering the unknown.
The game isn’t particularly movie-like, but it effectively completes its tasks, and I found the exploration of the unfolding events, particularly intriguing throughout the almost 30-hour journey. A significant part of Atomfall‘s worth lies in the fragments of information you gather en route, such as notes and similar items, coupled with a vibrant collection of characters who aren’t always reliable and have much to share.
I also appreciated the distinctly British touch, it seemed. There’s an endearing quirkiness about discovering a vivid red telephone box hidden amidst trees that starts ringing just for you.
Beyond its narrative, the game Atomfall unveils its enigma primarily through gameplay mechanics. It offers typical melee and ranged combat options, and the main character has access to a variety of weapons. Just like any survival game, you’ll need to scavenge for whatever resources you require. There’s no guidance provided here, which could either be frustrating or advantageous, depending on your point of view.
Given our restricted storage capacity, I opted for an even distribution strategy because the protagonist’s life could potentially end at any instant. Firearms are available but acquiring ammunition isn’t always risk-free. Bows and arrows are another option, which I find more beneficial due to the possibility of reuse after firing them.
Additional effective ranged weapons include throwable items such as Molotov cocktails. Melee weapons are also beneficial for delivering more powerful blows, though I find that certain melee weapons, like the cricket bat, have a rather lengthy wind-up period which can be inconvenient. In tight spots, the protagonist can use their feet to strike enemies and momentarily disorient them, making it essential to practice using all available abilities efficiently.
Monitoring the protagonist’s heart rate during battles can be quite tricky, as it’s simple to lose track and ease up unintentionally – particularly when facing formidable opponents such as the infected Feral creatures.
Once more, Atomfall doesn’t babysit you. I met my end multiple times, but much of it turned out to be a valuable lesson on how to navigate enemies, some of whom won’t give you a second thought unless they see you as a threat. Often, the most effective approach is to stealthily maneuver around them and escape, since combat can sometimes become clumsy and the difficulty may suddenly surge without any clear cause.
In Atomfall, it’s not constantly teetering on the edge as you might think. A significant aspect of the gameplay also involves embarking on quests, uncovering leads, and following up on them, engaging in dialogue with NPCs through various options provided. These leads often provide clues about where to go next. But remember, it’s crucial to stay vigilant because trust is a scarce commodity.
This reveals numerous opportunities for self-directed play within the open-ended environment of Atomfall, leaving ample room for exploration at a leisurely pace without any time constraints or set missions guiding your journey.
Despite Atomfall being technologically outstanding, it excels in the abundance of assets it showcases. The game boasts an array of greenery, diverse locations ranging from villages to forests, and even a detention center, all brimming with intriguing elements to capture your attention.
As a devoted admirer, I’ve found that the game “Atomfall” generally performs well on my PC. However, there were occasional hiccups with jerky animations, which slightly marred the experience. Furthermore, an unfortunate incident occurred where an NPC met an untimely demise and refused to respawn unless I restarted a save.
In essence, Atomfall offers a wealth of activities to engage in. If you’re drawn to survival games with an element of enigma and perhaps find appeal in the challenging gameplay style reminiscent of Elden Ring, then this game is tailored just for you.
Despite some challenging aspects and unexpected surges in difficulty, Atomfall maintains an engaging quality, particularly for players who enjoy exploring different endings. It’s evident that the developers poured a great deal of affection into this game, and the enigma that ties it all together makes for an intriguing adventure worth investigating.
