Judi Dench thriller Red Joan, based on real-life spy story, is on TV tonight

Fans of Dame Judi Dench will be delighted to know that she’s appearing tonight on BBC Two, starring in “Red Joan,” a suspenseful drama with roots in real-life incidents.

Joan Smith (portrayed by Dame Judi Dench) seems to be a simple retiree, but finds herself under police scrutiny due to allegations from her past days. In significant flashback sequences, Sophie Cookson portrays this character.

The summary of the movie (according to Rotten Tomatoes) states that Joan Stanley, a woman living a peaceful retirement in the suburbs, is unexpectedly apprehended by the British Intelligence Services.

The task at hand involves the act of sharing top-secret scientific data, such as blueprints for creating an atomic bomb, with the Soviet government over extended periods.

During the questioning, Joan recounts the pivotal moments that significantly influenced her life and her convictions.

As the investigation begins, Joan shares the crucial incidents that defined her life and shaped her views.

The movie is based on Jennie Rooney’s book, which drew its inspiration from the real-life events surrounding Melita Norwood, a British government employee who worked as a spy for the KGB.

Following its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018, the film “Red Joan” was released in cinemas globally in April of the next year, earning approximately $9.5 million worldwide in ticket sales.

The response to this specific feature was somewhat divided, with a Rotten Tomatoes critic approval rating of just 30%, contrasting sharply with a more favorable audience rating of 56%. This difference might indicate a slight disagreement among opinions.

According to critic Alan Jones for the production titled TopMob, Judi Dench delivers an intense performance in her role, while Sophie Cookson adequately portrays her during flashback scenes. However, Trevor Nunn’s direction is rather dull. The movie’s conclusion is predictable, making it lack tension and excitement throughout the film.

Even though it airs quite late, diehard fans of Dame Judi Dench might find Red Joan worth watching. BBC Two will be screening the film tonight at 11:05 pm on Friday, 28th March 2025. Don’t forget to set your recording if you’d rather catch it another time!

Alternatively, the film is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
