The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become incredibly popular, largely due to its thrilling superhero adventures, yet romance has consistently been a significant aspect in the narratives. Iconic MCU couples, such as Spider-Man/Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and MJ (Zendaya), Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), and numerous others, have graced the franchise over time. Love stories in the MCU have given rise to some of its most memorable scenes, stirring emotions that have resonated deeply with viewers, creating many tender moments between romantic pairs that continue to win the hearts of fans.
Among the heartwarming instances of love displayed by Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) couples, these five have left a lasting impression as the most captivating examples of romance within the series so far.
5) Phastos Kisses His Husband Goodbye in Eternals
In the 2021 film “Eternals”, the principal characters, an alien superhero squad, had spent centuries living like ordinary humans on Earth prior to their reunion. Phastos (played by Brian Tyree Henry) and his husband Ben (Haaz Sleiman) were among them, having married and raised a child together over time. When the Eternals unexpectedly appeared at Phastos’ residence, requesting him to join them in preventing the Emergence, he eventually agreed. Before departing, he shared an affectionate kiss with his husband, which served as a tender moment between two lovers. This scene also marked the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first gay kiss. The love between Phastos and Ben symbolizes Phastos’ commitment to protecting humans in defiance of their creator, Arishem. Their kiss carries a strong message that love transcends everything else and signified progress within the franchise, as it had previously lacked on-screen LGBTQ+ relationships.
4) Peter & MJ’s Final Kiss in Spider-Man: No Way Home
In the climactic scene of last year’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Peter (Tom Holland) and MJ (Zendaya) shared a deeply emotional kiss under heartrending circumstances, which adds to its legendary status. With mere seconds left before Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) cast his spell erasing Spider-Man’s identity from everyone’s memory, Peter had to bid farewell to MJ, Ned (Jacob Batalon), and his alternate versions. Just before the spell took effect, Peter and MJ shared a lengthy, intense kiss with the sun setting behind them. Given that this kiss might be their final goodbye in the MCU, it carries significant emotional weight. Furthermore, Holland and Zendaya’s on-screen chemistry is evident, despite the limited screen time devoted to their romance. However, this scene stands as their most poignant and romantic moment together.
3) T’Challa & Nakia Fall Back in Love in Black Panther
In the opening of “Black Panther” from 2018, I found myself in a familiar yet strained dynamic with Nakia (played by Lupita Nyong’o). We were once lovers, but our connection seemed distant. However, as the story unfolded, our feelings for each other rekindled, culminating in a heartwarming romantic moment towards the end of the movie.
Peace had finally been restored in Wakanda following my resurrection and the defeat of Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan). In one of the final scenes, I expressed my gratitude to Nakia for her crucial role in saving me and my family. Our renewed affection was then beautifully conveyed through several tender kisses between us.
The pairing between T’Challa and Nakia stood out among the MCU’s most captivating romantic couples, thanks to the exceptional acting by Chadwick Boseman and Lupita Nyong’o that created a powerful on-screen connection. Notably, Black Panther delved deeply into their relationship, avoiding hasty development. Throughout their collaboration in thwarting Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) and Killmonger, T’Challa and Nakia formed a stronger bond, which ultimately led them to rekindle their romantic feelings for each other.
2) Vision Comforts Wanda & Delivers an Iconic Line in WandaVision
In episode 8 of ‘WandaVision’, a poignant exploration of grief is encapsulated through one scene. Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), the show’s protagonist, delves into her tragic past, where she lost her parents, brother Pietro (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), and her beloved Vision (Paul Bettany). During a flashback sequence, Wanda and Vision have a heartfelt discussion about Wanda’s deceased brother, Pietro. This conversation culminates in a memorable line from Vision that underscores the theme of grief, “What is grief, if not love enduring?
In a non-romantic way, this quote echoes the emotional journey of Wanda and Vision’s relationship, as she will soon mourn him. Known for their strong bond, they beautifully portray it in this poignant scene from WandaVision. Moreover, Vision’s words offer a profound foreshadowing to the bittersweet finale, where Wanda confronts the reality of losing her beloved partner.
1) Agatha & Rio’s Heartfelt Moment Together in Agatha All Along
In the 2024 series Agatha All Along, the rekindling of the relationship between Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) and her former lover, Rio Vidal/Death (Aubrey Plaza), stands out as one of the most captivating storylines. Throughout the series, Agatha and Rio share intense moments like their battle in Episode 1’s finale and their deathly kiss in the grand finale, but the most poignant scene occurs at the end of Episode 4. In this scene, Rio speaks to the coven, saying, “She is my scar,” symbolizing the emotional wound she caused Agatha when she took her deceased son to the afterlife centuries ago. Agatha then wanders into the woods, and Rio follows; as their old feelings resurface, they eventually embrace for a prolonged moment before Agatha attempts to kiss Rio. However, Rio halts her, creating a powerful moment of unresolved emotions.
The captivating interaction between two intriguing ex-lovers, Agatha and Rio, in episode 4 of Agatha All Along, is arguably the most memorable romantic moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The actors’ exceptional chemistry intensifies the palpable tension and rekindled emotions between them, creating a scene that speaks volumes without much dialogue. Agatha’s emotional exposure towards Rio represents a significant shift in her character, as she had previously shown nothing but hostility towards the Green Witch. Rio’s confession of remorse for his past actions toward Agatha sets the stage for the intense emotions that both characters display in the episode’s final moments, marking one of the MCU’s most impactful romantic scenes to date.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is returning to cinemas with “Captain America: New World Order,” currently playing in theatres. Meanwhile, “Daredevil: Rebirth” is airing new episodes every Tuesday on Disney+. Lastly, mark your calendars for May 2nd as “Thunderbolts” hits theaters.
*Note that I replaced “Thunderbolts” with “Thunderbolts” since it’s a team in the MCU and using the plural form would be more appropriate in this context.
