Has Don Warrington really left Death in Paradise?
After the Season 14 finale, everyone’s been wondering: Did Selwyn Patterson, the ex-commissioner (tearfully), accept the job offer he received to return, but then turned it down instead?
“You were never going to accept, were you?” asked Catherine.
He affirmed, “I don’t agree. The situation that’s unfolded makes it difficult for me to say ‘yes.’ At this moment, I’m struggling to envision a path back to the way things used to be.
Selwyn is going to have a well-deserved break, spending some time on personal activities, and one part of that will include meeting up with his daughter, Andrina.
But after that?
He remarked, “I wonder who might know.” Turning to them, he requested, “Swear to me that you’ll take care of yourselves, and of each other,” indicating towards his former colleagues.
Additionally, Mayor Catherine put forth a plea to him: “Assure me it’s not goodbye, but see you later,” she inquired.
“Au revoir then, my friend” he said, before hopping into a taxi.
After making one last visit to share with Mervin the surprising revelation that the enigmatic ‘S’ was none other than the DI’s sibling, Solomon, and to encourage him to reach out, Selwyn finally left.
Selwyn finished up his conversation by telling Mervin the unexpected news that the secretive ‘S’ was actually the DI’s brother, Solomon, and advised him to connect. With that, Selwyn set off again.
But is this the last we’ve seen of him?

The door has clearly been left open, which could see him return as the commissioner in season 15.
Taking some well-deserved rest after a particularly challenging phase in his life may truly benefit him, almost like a prescription from a physician. Once things calm down and settle, he might feel eager to resume activities again.
It’s possible that no one else may be able to fill his boss’s vacancy temporarily, and given his dedication to the island and its inhabitants, Selwyn might feel obligated to take over until they find someone suitable. In truth, there seems to be no other person as qualified as Selwyn to assume his law enforcement role on a temporary basis.
In another scenario, might he appear on the series without formally joining Honoré PD, coming and going as he often did during Season 14, sharing his sage advice and detective intuition occasionally?
Indeed, I can’t predict what lies ahead in this fascinating journey we call life,” I mused before the onset of Season 14, as some speculated they couldn’t envision the series without my presence.
However, guest actor Tobi Bakare thinks that Death in Paradise might persist even without the commissioner. Yet, he admitted that his absence would certainly be felt strongly.
“Don is just Don,” he added. “So there’ll be some coming back from him.”
Death in Paradise is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
