Tekken 8 Walks Back Baffling Season 2 System Change After Player Protests

Update on March 29, 2025 at 12:30 PM: The developers behind Tekken 8 have announced that one of the debated adjustments from Season 2 won’t remain a lasting feature.

Earlier this week, there was widespread anger when it became known that, in Season 2, performing breaking throws (a long-standing Tekken mechanic) would cause minimal harm to the player on defense. In other words, the game designers intended to penalize those who possessed the timing and skill to counter an incoming attack effectively.

Users were baffled as to the rationale behind the developers introducing such a fundamental change, yet fortunately, they are reconsidering their decision.

In the initial glimpse at the Season 2 updates posted on the official Tekken website, a part mentions, ‘Adjustments Made Following Community Input’, further clarifying that the chip damage during throw breaks has been deemed as too high.

It appears that the readjustment might not occur simultaneously with the major Season 2 update, as the update has likely been completed and scheduled for launch on the 1st of April.

The patch notes indicate that these modifications will be implemented swiftly, but there could be a minor hold-up right after the launch of version 2.00.

Even though there’s still some lingering anxiety about Season 2, it’s reassuring to know that developers are attentive to our concerns.

The highly anticipated Tekken 8 game is expected to incorporate an unexpected mechanical modification within the extensive update known as Season 2.

In a recent Tekken Talk session, where the main developers discuss and demonstrate future updates, they announced that broken throws will cause chip damage moving forward. Needless to say, this revelation has sparked quite a noise among the player community.

Throughout the course of Tekken’s history, throw breaks have been a fundamental aspect. In other words, when an opponent grabs you, there’s a brief opportunity to press the necessary buttons and escape from danger. Skilled players who closely observe their opponents are essentially rewarded for their quick reading skills.

However, it seems that in Tekken 8’s Season 2, players will face penalties for successfully countering a throw attempt. As dedicated Tekken enthusiasts, we find it hard to grasp the advantages behind this change.

It’s important to clarify that the harm inflicted on the defending player by the chip is relatively small, but it’s still something greater than zero. Unfortunately, this adds to the problem because the development team had stated earlier that Season 2 would offer more defensive strategies as a counterbalance to the game’s overly aggressive style. However, now it seems that damage is being incurred even for breaking throws.

Changes to the core system in this series are quite rare and infrequent across the entire franchise, making this decision seem particularly puzzling. There’s a possibility that the developer might reconsider this change before Season 2 launches on March 31st, but at the moment, we’re looking at a significant shift that players will need to adapt to.

Season 2 appears to offer a vast array of modifications, encompassing both systemic and character-specific changes. It’s possible that other tweaks may balance out this new throw break dynamic, but since the team didn’t provide any further explanation during Tekken Talk, it seems rather improbable at this point.

How do you feel about the modification in Tekken 8 regarding throws? Is it fair to receive penalty for breaking a throw? Please, take any chip damage from the comment section below.
