Vampire Diaries Author LJ Smith Dies at 66

L.J. Smith, renowned author of ‘The Vampire Diaries‘ book series that spawned a popular TV show, has tragically passed away at the age of 66. For over a decade, Smith battled the effects of a rare autoimmune disease in the hospital before her death on March 8th. Her partner Julie Divola and sister Judy Clifford confirmed the news to The New York Times. An official statement from Smith’s website is also available below. Our deepest condolences go out to Smith’s loved ones during this heartbreaking time.

On their official site, it’s stated that Lisa was a radiant and compassionate individual whose intelligence, ingenuity, fortitude, and empathy shone brightly in the lives of her loved ones, acquaintances, and admirers. She will be cherished for her inventive mind, her groundbreaking work in the realm of supernatural literature, and her kindness, warmth, and compassion, which were evident not only in her writing but also in her everyday interactions.

Throughout her professional journey, Smith penned over 29 books and created numerous successful series such as Vampire Diaries and Night World. Additionally, she wrote multiple trilogies like The Secret Circle, The Forbidden Game, and Dark Visions, along with various works including Wildworld, The Night of the Solstice, and Heart of Valor.

The Vampire Diaries always held a unique connection, as it eventually transformed into a popular TV show bearing the same name. Running for 8 seasons on The CW from 2012 until 2017, the series was a resounding success. Notable characters like Elena Gilbert (played by Nina Dobrev), Stefan Salvatore (portrayed by Paul Wesley), and Damon Salvatore (interpreted by Ian Somerhalder) were brought to life on screen. Since its conclusion, it has remained a beloved choice among fans.

Back in 1991, I was captivated when Smith initially unfurled the compelling narrative that would span over two decades. She crafted four magnificent books, leaving us hanging on every word. Then, in 2009, she gracefully returned with a breathtaking new trilogy. Despite being discarded by her publishers who held the series rights, Smith’s unwavering passion for these characters never waned. In true resilience, she found innovative ways to continue their story, even penning fan fiction and concocting fresh narratives for them.

Thoughts are extended to Smith’s loved ones, hoping they find comfort during these challenging moments.
