Anticipation is high among “The Last of Us” fans as Season 2 gears up for its HBO debut on April 13th. They’re eager to see how the series will bring to life the events from the second Naughty Dog game, a task that carries significant expectation given the strong reactions to the sequel’s narrative. The second season of this critically acclaimed series introduces new cast members, including actress Isabela Merced who steps into the role of Dina. Recently, Merced has been seen in various media adaptations, such as “Madame Web,” “Alien: Romulus,” and her DC superhero debut as Hawkgirl in James Gunn’s “Superman.” In a recent interview for Season 2, she shared that her most passionate fan encounters haven’t stemmed from PlayStation gamers or Alien enthusiasts, but rather from those connected to her 2019 role in “Dora and the Lost City of Gold.
As a gamer, I stepped into the limelight for the first time in a live-action Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures adventure film, where I portrayed Dora – a character that hadn’t been brought to life on the big screen before. The weight of this pioneering role was immense, and I felt the pressure to deliver a performance that would make a lasting impact. Although the movie didn’t set box office records, critics lauded my portrayal as the older, multilingual version of the beloved protagonist.
During our chat with actress Young Mazino’s co-star, we inquired from Merced about which fan base she finds the most demanding to cater to. In her reply, she highlighted her interaction with fans while playing the explorer character.
I found myself utterly captivated by Dora – she left me breathless! To be honest, the intensity of my feelings towards her took me aback. It could be due to our shared history, but whatever it is, I can confidently say she has left quite an impact on me.
As reported by HOLA, Merced embodied her role as Dora by acquiring fluency in Quechua, an indigenous language native to Peru. Her strong affiliation with the character originates from being frequently referred to as Dora by friends and serving as a voice for the Latina community. Moreover, the movie was aimed at captivating a vast audience of children and adolescents, a significant demographic considering that Dora the Explorer continues to air on television.
As an actor, it can be a delicate balancing act to win over fanbases, but Merced has been navigating this terrain skillfully for quite some time now and shows no signs of slowing down. With her upcoming character Dina in The Last of Us Season 2, the actress has hinted at a captivating on-screen dynamic with Ellie actress Bella Ramsey, a connection fans will get to witness in the forthcoming episodes.
The Last of Us Season 2 premieres on HBO and MAX on April 13th.
