Atomfall’s Radio Towers confused the daylights out of me, but then I stumbled upon a key character and all became clear

Among the numerous enigmas that characterize the Cumberland countryside in Atomfall is a group of three radio towers. You can find one in Slatten Dale, another in Skethermoor, and yet another hidden within Casterfell Woods.

Whenever I find myself standing before those towering radio structures, there’s often a tale hidden behind them. However, upon my initial approach, it’s usually locked and inaccessible.

Among all aspects of Atomfall, it was the Radio Towers that left me feeling most puzzled. To begin with, they are deactivated, and despite having the Signal Redirector, I couldn’t find any method to activate the door locks.

This is due to the fact that the Radio Towers serve as a means to reach one of several conclusions, and accessing them requires finding Joyce Tanner first. Keeping tabs on all the different characters can be challenging, and she might unexpectedly show up, just like she did with me.

By sheer luck, I chanced upon some valuable information which I’d like to share with you. It should help guide you toward the Radio Towers. Go forth and good luck!

Who is Joyce Tanner and where you meet her

To preserve the surprise, just as with other significant characters in Atomfall, Joyce Tanner also has a path to uncover for reaching one of the game’s conclusions.

In simpler terms, Tanner is another researcher who was on the failed expedition into the restricted area. Given her expertise, she focuses on communication systems, which explains the radio towers. After managing to survive, she now requires a way to transmit a message beyond the boundary of the zone.

You could run into Joyce Tanner at a few different spots. To begin with, she’s hiding out in a secluded hideout within Casterfell Woods, but I failed to locate her there.

It seems that if you enter the Interchange and activate Data Store C, Tanner will emerge from her underground hiding place and make her way there, surprising you as she did before.

Once you meet Joyce Tanner, the rest is easier

Engaging with Joyce Tanner provides the solution for unlocking the Radio Towers. No necessity for rerouting power or suchlike complications; she simply presses a magical button granting you entry!

Huzzah!

Well, kind of.

In Atomfall, no one performs tasks without a reason, and as expected, Tanner has her own objectives. She requires the towers to broadcast her message beyond the designated area, yet the task remains incompleted halfway.

So, you become somebody else’s dogsbody.

For each radio tower, you’ll require a specific keycard to effectively turn it on. Fortunately, the game will guide you to the location of the keycard instead of leaving you to randomly search for it.

In my experience, opting against simply dropping a marked-up map with every location pinned down adds to the excitement of Atomfall. The thrill lies in the journey of discovery.

Each radio tower provides a significant hint about its location on the map. A notice is pinned up at every site, guiding you towards it. The instructions for two towers seem quite clear-cut, but locating the one in Casterfell Woods requires preparation due to its challenging nature.

To have any hope of making it through, I’d strongly recommend that you’ve crossed paths with Mother Jago and mastered her secret elixir recipe. And let me tell you, getting equipped enough to tackle the Feral hordes is an absolute must!

After obtaining the keycards, you’ll be able to activate every Radio Tower, which in turn advances Joyce Tanner’s journey. En route, you’ll meet a new character – the scientist known as Dr. Garrow.
