In contrast to the usual solitary nature of action roguelikes, a new adventure titled “33 Immortals” from Canadian studio Thunder Lotus (known for indie hits like Spiritfarer, Sundered, and Jotun) is redefining the genre by offering cooperative experiences. This game, currently in Game Preview, can be found exclusively on Xbox and the Epic Games Store. If you’re an Xbox Game Pass subscriber, you can team up with your friends to play it.
33 Immortals transports you into the role of a soul condemned by divine judgment, banished to the Beyond. Instead of submitting to endless torment, your spirit chooses to unite with other cursed souls in a rebellion, aiming to breach the pearly gates and potentially engage in a confrontation against God himself, mirroring the spirit of defiance found in Dante Alighieri’s 14th-century epic poem, The Divine Comedy.
33 Immortals takes you on an epic voyage reminiscent of Dante’s personal odyssey through Hell and Purgatory in The Divine Comedy, as you lead a 33-member team. This journey requires cooperation and unity among the team members to conquer the demons blocking your pathway to Paradise.
33 Immortals, inspired by Dante Alighieri’s writings, is yet to complete its narrative. At present, it’s available in Game Preview, allowing players who band together for raids to delve into a limited portion of the game world. The visual style and integration of roguelike mechanics in 33 Immortals echo Supergiant Games’ hit roguelike, Hades, combined with 14th-century poetry and massively multiplayer raid dynamics.
Regardless of whether you’re embarking on an adventure with 32 close friends or joining forces with new acquaintances (yet-to-be-met allies), it’s essential to consider your gear and abilities before embarking on your rebellion. Solo play is possible, but maintaining communication and cooperation significantly increases your chances of success throughout your journey. Having at least one or two companions with whom to strategize before setting off makes the journey easier.
As you gather resources with your team, you’ll meet characters reminiscent of Dante Alighieri’s works – figures like Virgil, Beatrice, and even Dante himself. You can find these characters in the player area called the Dark Woods, where they act as mentors to help navigate the Beyond. In this realm, you can enhance your spirit by trading different points and valuable items for abilities and other benefits. Following the style of a traditional Roguelike game, each time you unlock new features and advance between attempts, your subsequent rebellious ventures will become increasingly successful.

In The Dark Woods, players have the freedom to select their gear, socialize with friends and fellow adventurers, and earn prizes by fulfilling daily tasks. Their ultimate goal is embarking on a quest aimed at achieving eternal life.
After getting fully prepared, you and your rebellion will journey through the Everlasting Gate, venturing deep into the heart of the Beyond. Here, you’ll encounter numerous dungeons filled with adversaries. The world is brimming with intriguing sights to discover, and players can stumble upon upgrade chests, altars, and question mark-marked breakables. Some altars enable players to invest the resources they earn from vanquishing enemies and opening chests, leveling up and acquiring keys before embarking on a smaller mission to conquer a Torture Chamber.
If you and your team successfully navigate the chamber, you’ll be given one chest at no cost. Additionally, a key previously acquired can unlock a second chest, providing additional rewards. As players grow in power, they journey through the world, encountering tougher groups in Torture Chambers and Ascension Battles. Eventually, they’ll face colossal bosses in MMO style raids, reminiscent of true nightmares.

Thunder Lotus Games intends to create 33 Immortals in collaboration with its player community, using their feedback to guide the game’s development. They have unveiled a plan for enhancements and fresh elements in future updates, and players can anticipate innovations such as controller remapping and enhanced UI, balancing, and visual effects.
Initially available, “33 Immortals” provides two realms to discover within “The Beyond”. A further realm named “Paridiso” is set to debut in Fall 2025. Future updates include new adversaries, customization options for “The Dark Woods”, and exclusive encounters with your preferred eternal characters.
33 Immortals from Thunder Lotus is now accessible only on Xbox consoles, but it’s worth noting that it adheres to Xbox’s Play Anywhere program. This means if you buy the game on either Xbox or PC, you gain access to both platforms with cross-save functionality. If you have an Xbox Game Pass subscription, you can engage in the battle against final judgment and strive for your immortality as part of your subscription benefits.
