Epic Universe.
A Return to Full Capacity—But Why Now?
After the 2020 park closures and subsequent phased reopenings, Disney has been running its water parks on a rotating schedule, with neither Blizzard Beach nor Typhoon Lagoon open simultaneously. The official explanation given was due to staffing and maintenance issues, but it’s rumored that Disney has been implementing cost-cutting measures discreetly.

However, with Universal‘s Epic Universe set to debut in 2025, captivating audiences with advanced attractions, themed realms, and innovative hotel offerings, it seems that Disney is making some strategic changes. Having all six of its parks operational simultaneously is not merely about enhancing guest experience; it also serves as a strong statement and an effort to maintain visitors within the Disney-controlled environment.
Disney plans to uphold its reign in Central Florida using all the resources it has, including tools that have been unused for quite some time.
A Tale of Two Water Parks
Guests will be able to choose between
- Typhoon Lagoon, which opens May 1 and stays operational throughout the summer. It’s known for its tropical theme and iconic wave pool, a family favorite that has historically been the more popular of the two water parks.
- Blizzard Beach, which will briefly close for seasonal maintenance from May 1–20 before reopening on May 21. Originally opened in 1995, this ski-resort-themed water park just wrapped its 30th anniversary celebration and will be fully refreshed for the summer crowds.

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that we no longer need to take a chance on which parks are open or make do with just one, thanks to this new development, the first since the global health predicament!
Free Water Park Access for Resort Guests
As a devoted cinephile who’s recently returned from a magical journey at Disney World, I must share an exciting update that might just sweeten your next visit.
This delightful addition not only adds a dash of extra fun to your vacation but also eliminates the need for a separate water park ticket. It’s a thoughtful gesture that could potentially increase occupancy rates at Disney-owned resorts. However, it seems this move has sparked some controversy among the guest community, as many arriving guests don’t typically check-in until late morning, leaving only a few hours for splashing fun before the water parks close for the day.

During a summer anticipated to offer numerous travel discounts and intense rivalry among regional attractions, such an extra feature might tip the scales for indecisive families considering whether to visit Disney or Universal.
The Broader Competitive Picture
It’s no accident that this massive summer project is being launched now, as Universal’s Epic Universe presents a significant challenge for Disney, potentially the toughest yet. With state-of-the-art zones inspired by Nintendo, How to Train Your Dragon, and an updated version of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Universal is placing high stakes on attracting the next wave of theme park enthusiasts.

Contrastingly, Disney has been under fire in recent times due to slow progress, focusing more on reducing costs, and relying excessively on old favorites instead of new ideas. The decision to open all six parks this summer could be an attempt to change that perception – a message that emphasizes Disney as a top-tier, high-value experience that justifies the higher ticket price.
The Bottom Line
In recent times, Disney has been playing defense, but the summer of 2025 indicates a more assertive and action-oriented Walt Disney World, gearing up for a fight against Universal’s most significant move yet. It is unclear if this renewed vigor signals a lasting trend or just a summer-long strategy; only time will tell.
But for guests? It means more options, more splash, and—for once—more value.
